I actually find River Song annoying and obnoxious. Just wanted to get that out there for the record. Nothing against Alex Kingston. I can tell she loves playing the character. The character just rubs me the wrong way.

I’m not in love with the idea behind the character and the possible implications of her unique relationship with the Doctor (gaslighting every incarnation prior to Ten most of all). Even with that, Alex Kingston brings an infectious energy that is definitely refreshing after ten or so episodes of Doc & Friends doing their regular thing, her appearances are spread so far apart that it’s almost refreshing when she pops up again, and I’m glad to know that, thanks to Big Finish and “The Diary of River Song” series, she’s had the chance to construct a rich life for River that doesn’t entirely revolve around the Doctor. Ignoring the relationship baggage, an Ace/Bernice Summerfield hybrid deep in the weeds of NuWho’s wildest excesses works surprisingly well for me.

I find it interesting that she’s so accepting as the Doctor’s wife, and even the kind of romance with Rose Tyler, while Grace from the TV movie got dumped on because the Doctor kissed her once in an excited moment.
