Doing reviews of my old comics gives me six potential entries in the Friday Night Fights each week. Sometimes I’ll be reviewing a series that more often than not gives the best fight of the week compared to whatever else I review, which means you see a lot of repeat entries. If I can do something different with the same character or group I’m all for it. For example the Phantom has been showing up a lot in my entries, especially during the Moonstone run, which is probably some of the best Phantom comics this side of the comic strip it comes from. However, in this week’s offering the Phantom isn’t the hero. He’s actually the one being saved, or at least one of his ancestors is. And she’s pretty famous too.
Played Al on Quantum Leap (Photo credit: Wikipedia, the only image Sovrn came up with)
I enjoyed Quantum Leap when it aired on NBC although I don’t really watch it nowadays. I also have one issue of the comic and I will obviously review that on “Yesterday’s” Comic at some point. (And no, Sean, I don’t want to review the other issues. I didn’t stay as into the show as you have.) It was a good show but I just lost interest after the show ended.
For those of you who don’t know…you’re probably not going to get anything out of this posting, but Quantum Leap was about Dr. Sam Beckett, who created a machine that would allow him to travel within his own timeline but through the bodies of others. Aided by Al, his observer who could teleproject to Sam via a hologram only he could see and hear, Sam dealt with missing memories (including one episode showing he has a wife back home in the future, which is the declaration at the end of the episode that he was never returning home always bugged me) and had to fix what went wrong with these people’s lives. It is a good show and I do recommend seeing it.
But did you know that there is a scene that was filmed but never aired showing what Al’s life was like after a certain change in his life? Allison Pregler, formerly know as Obscurus Lupa on Channel Awesome and now host of Movie Nights, found evidence of this scene via found negatives and scripts. Here she pieces together how the show could have ended as well as some other interesting trivia.
When I first saw the trailers for a movie starring Jackie Chan and Jet Li as rivals on a mission in ancient China I was already on board. I haven’t seen may of Li’s movies (the only one that even comes to mind is the first Black Mask and in The One and maybe a few other appearances I’m not remembering) but I certainly know his reputation as a movie marital artist. And while I’m not the biggest Chan Fan you know I do very much enjoy the movies I saw him in. Except Shanghai Noon but I can’t even blame Owen Wilson for that one. So of course I was really looking forward to seeing this movie.
Unfortunately it came out in 2008, the OTHER year I made multiple trips to the hospital, where I learned about Crohn’s Disease not from when I was diagnosed but in the ER where one of the other patients didn’t believe she was just having a flare-up. Fun times. At least I didn’t get operated on and it was only two trips because the inflammation jumped a loop. Suffice it say I missed the movie. I did DVR it when I saw it air on TV…but didn’t get a chance to watch it, and then we switched cable providers and I didn’t get a chance to watch it. That is until last night months after I DVRed it yet again. So at least I didn’t miss it this time. So was it worth the wait 10 years later?
