At life, but that’s not what I’m talking about here. Look, I’m a capitalist. I support making a profit since we all need money to live on. However, buying a rare product from a legitimate store and selling it on eBay at jacked up prices is just immoral. Double that when it’s a product aimed at kids, like the scalpers who snatched up a bunch of basically Pokémon toys from McDonald’s just to sell them. However, sometimes those scalpers end up screwing themselves over instead of their targets customers. Guru Larry tracks down five such failures by scalpers to rob people. Note the mild cursing and Larry’s continued war on Peter Molyneux. I think Peter ran over Larry’s dog, drove back over, did it again, got out of the car and did a Riverdance on it, backed over it again, and drove off singing “We Are The Champions”.

I was hoping people would show up for the livestream but nobody came. I wish I was better with audience participation but that’s a complaint for another time. I have finally finished Seduction Of The Innocent, a book that was often a chore to get through, but I did it! I’m free of this book!
Of course there may be more to be said. This book had a huge, rather negative, influence on comics and comic creators and publishers. That was noted in the article I linked this morning. However, as a primary point of discussion I’m done. Except for my final thoughts on the book…and why, despite all of the garbage in it, I actually recommend reading it.

You think this book is bad, because it is, but you don’t know the half of it. After Dr. Wertham’s death in 1981 his notes that were part of the book were sent to the Library Of Congress. In 2010, just after they were opened, writer Carol Tilley went to check his research in the hopes of finding information about the supposed letters sent to him by librarians worried that comics were pulling kids away from books and libraries. Not only did she find that this was overblown, but that most of his book were filled with exaggerations, missing information, and falsehoods! I don’t care how well Wertham meant, there is no excuse for this.

Here we are at long last. There were times I didn’t think I’d make it but this should be the last time I have to read through and discuss this book outside of the wrap-up. It’s been a long, disappointing journey, hasn’t it? It hasn’t been easy but it’s a series I’m not sorry I did and it was very important to do so. Because what we saw in the days of comics still happens every time a new way to tell a story is created. It happened with comics, it happened with video games. Even a medium that is simply another form of an already established medium, like TV, isn’t born without scrutiny. It’s easy to write something off, but more rewarding to push not the limits of good taste but the limits of what a media format can do in order to tell a good story.
This is Doctor Wertham’s final chance to convince the reader that comic books are inherently bad for kids, but we’ve seen a lot of that is based on bias. Bias based on a certain locale. Bias based on preferred reading or artistic style and tastes. I don’t doubt Wertham wanted to do good, but he came from such a bad place that he just got so much wrong. The road to hell IS often paved with good intentions and Wertham knows how to spread that asphalt. So let’s finish this book already!
While they get along today, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were rivals for the title of top action star in the 1980s. One trick the future former Governor did on the future director was getting him to star in the horrible Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot, with Estelle Getty as his mom (and without her Sophia costume). ScreenCrush tells the story. Personally that was a cruel thing to do, especially since he only has himself to blame for the far worse Junior. At least Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot theoretically had a good premise.
