Voltron: Defender Of The Universe vol. 2 #7

Devil’s Due (July, 2004)

“Warpath” part 2

WRITER: Dan Jolley

PENCILERS: E.J. Su & Clint Hillinski

COLORISTS: David Messina, Frederica Manfredi, & Barbara Bargiggia

COVER ART: Don Figueroa, Clayton Brown, & Grafik Sismik

LETTERING: Dreamer Design

EDITOR: Mark Powers

Shocked at the news that Sven has turned traitor, their discovery that Merla is involved, and Hawkins’s revelation of her powers, make them prepared to save him…although the thought that they may have to eliminate him to protect Arus doesn’t sit well with Lance, Hunk, and Pidge. The Vehicle Team can only stay to watch Arus for a limited time, so the Lion Force hurries out. Zarkon has a “father/son chat” with Lotor while Sven meets Merla and Hagar, and are soon joined by Lotor!

What they got right: Coran has a point. Sven designed or repaired much of Arus’ defensive systems, which makes him a threat mind control or not. There’s a cool scene where they use Voltron to scare the daylights out of a Seventh Kingdom space-based survey post. You also see that Keith isn’t very happy with this situation. We get into his head and into Sven’s (literally and figuratively).

What they got wrong: Not wrong necessarily but there were a lot of shots of people giving dirty looks over their shoulder. It’s an odd thing to notice but it happens two or three times.

Recommendation: As usually I highly recommend this series. It’s some darn good Voltron and a good demonstration as to how to update an 80s series.

The cover art on these Voltron comic books is incredible. Yes, Coran makes an excellent point when he states that Sven is now a major threat to Arus.
