Friday Night Fight: Jerkules

What’s more summer than fireworks? Well, probably a few things but when you’re dealing with Hercules you end up living a Michael Bay movie on a good day. Since we’re at the point where he has lost his immortality but still drinks booze like water, that means it’s going to get worse.

At this point I’m just padding out the intro to a proper length visually. So…how are you? How are the kids? Good, good. How’s that rash. Did it…you know what, never mind.

BW’s Morning Video: Enter The Dragon Trivia

Instead of a Morning Article Link, since I couldn’t find anything useful, have this trivia video from ScreenCrush about some behind the scenes facts about Bruce Lee’s last movie, Enter The Dragon.

Trope Shark: The Sam & Diane Romance

This isn’t an official trope name as far as I know among trope watchers, partly because it’s a combination of three other tropes, but it’s a combination that comes up a lot. And they’re easy to explain by their names: belligerent sexual tension, will they or won’t they, and opposites attract. Combining them gives you the romance of Sam and Diane from Cheers, the NBC sitcom set in a Boston, Massachusetts bar.

The thing is I don’t have a problem with their relationship. They were good characters and they had good chemistry, as did the actors portraying them. However, this formula has gotten rather out of hand not only with creators but with fans and slashfic writers, and some of them are an ornery bunch to begin with. Maybe it also helps, or hurts depending on your perspective, that the three parts often get misused by themselves.

BW’s Morning Article Link: The Prequel Problem

He (or she) who controls the origin controls the character. But some creators are more than willing to grab as much of that power as they can using flashbacks and prequels. Prequels have become the new sequel, or as James Harrigton calls it in his commentary, Prequelitis. As I wrote in the comments of that article, “On the one hand, hearing about the Clone Wars makes you curious as to what actually happened and what turned Anakin to the Dark Side. On the other, the answer was unsatisfying, and that’s the danger of a prequel.” As much as I liked the two cartoons set during the Clone Wars, it does come with a few problems, and that goes for other prequels. Especially ones like X-Men Origins: Wolverine that answered questions nobody asked, like where he got his jacket. That needed a backstory?

Albegas, The Voltron That Wasn’t

From days of long ago. From uncharted regions of the internet, comes a legend. The legend of Albegas (or Arbegas and a few other translations), defender of the universe! A mighty robot, loved by World Events, unknown to the fanbase.

As Voltron’s legend grew, peace settled across the airwaves. In the United States a fandom was formed. Together with the good kids of the neighborhood they maintained peace throughout afterschool TV time. Until a new, unfamiliar robot threatened the franchise…but I exaggerate. The Voltron they knew was needed once more.

This is the story of a forgotten force of space explorers. Specially selected but denied by fate to fully become…Voltron, defender of the universe!

Overdramatic? It’s my website, I can do what I want! 😀
