How The Marvel And DC Timelines Work (sort of)

Time in comics versus time in the real world are very inconsistent. The obvious reason is that Marvel and DC didn’t want to give up their characters, and so the world changed but the characters didn’t. Of course, DC also cheats with soft and hard reboots of their universe to the point that some people don’t want to get into it because the stories and ideas they like will be tossed aside in 5 years. Sooner if Geoff Johns is writing it and has a “better idea” than what’s been established. Last month.

In two old videos from NerdSync we get a look at how, in-story, these character manage to stay young while the universe follows along with our social, economic, and technological trends.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Marvel Adventures #10

It’s a character I don’t care about versus a character I really don’t like. Guess how I’ll review this.

Marvel Adventures #10

Marvel Comics (January, 1998)

Silver Surfer: “Redemption”

There are no credits given. Even Comics.org is only guessing as to who did what so I’m not going to be able to list anything here.

BW’s Morning Article List: DC Remembers Kids Exist

I came into the DC Universe as a kid, through Super Friends and reruns of the Filmation and live-action shows, and later into the comics during the “bronze age”. As of late DC Comics seems to keep their heroes away from kids, not counting the Justice League Action series on Cartoon Network (the things aren’t even a full-length episode, but still too long to be a short like CN enjoys doing now) or Scooby-Doo Team-Up and various attempts by Art Baltazar & Franco. Now ICv2 is reporting that DC will be launching a young reader’s imprint. No word on whether kid-friendly versions of DC superheroes will show up there and create a universe kids can enjoy, since the main universe no longer serves anyone not in college. I’ll keep an eye on this but I’m not what you’d call hopeful.

Chapter By Chapter: 1st Phase Shifters & The Omega Capsule ch. 13

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Last time Hoylt made his long-awaited appearance and suggested that something would happen during the parade. Now all our heroes can do is wait and not scare their Earth friends. Let’s see how that goes.

Chapter 13: Anticipation

Our image to start the chapter still looks like a cherry bomb to me. I wonder how that fits in or if I’m wrong? It could be a Christmas decoration. In the summer.

BW’s Morning Article Link: That Time Jack Kirby Helped Rescue Hostages

Not by himself mind you. Even the King Of Comics wasn’t that badass. However, a project he once worked on for a failed sci-fi movie and tie-in theme park (he did more than just comics) was used as part of a plan to rescue hostages at the US embassy by Iranian terrorists. Previews has a look at those designs, and talks about how they were used as part of the rescue plan. As a bonus link Wikipedia has an article about the “Canadian Caper” that they were used for. Ben Affleck made a movie called Argo (the name of the fictional movie Canadian officials and the CIA used for the plan) based on the events after it was declassified but apparently he messed up a few facts.

Jake & Leon #316: Free Comic Book Day 2017

Some people take FCBD too seriously. And then there’s Jake.

I almost forgot to do a Free Comic Book Day strip this week. FCBD took up a lot of my yesterday, so I didn’t get any clutter clearing done. I re-posted my old review of Batman: Digital Justice from here at BW.

This week we say goodbye to the Thundercats with the last comic in my collection to be reviewed, the final issue of Hammerhand’s Revenge. I also plan to get to the first storyline from the He-Man newspaper strips, “Day Of The Comet”. Not much else for me to report on this end. Hope you all have a good week and that BW is part of it.
