I’m already expecting so many primate puns that anything I wrote here would be overkill.

Scooby-Doo Team-Up #42

DC Comics (November, 2018; as seen in volume 7’s digital trade)

“Gorilla Warfare”

WRITER: Sholly Fisch

ARTIST: Dario Brizuela

COLORIST: Franco Riesco

LETTERER: Saida Temofonte

EDITOR: Kristy Quinn

Some of the DC universe’s villainous gorillas–Grodd, Ultra-Humanite, Monsieur Mallah, Pryemaul, Gorilla Boss, Mod Gorilla Boss, and Titano have joined forces to take over Pleasantville. However, Grodd soon takes over or commands the others to do his bidding. Our heroes are joined by Sam Simeon again, who calls in Congorilla and Detective Chimp. Our heroes do what they can but in the end it’s Congo Bill swapping Congorilla for Titano, that wins the day. Also, Beepo shows up for some reason.

What they got right: If you want a story showcasing the DC apes…here you go I guess.

What they got wrong: Cartoon Network Presents did something similar with the primates of Hanna-Barbera and it actually kind of worked. This story not so much. It just keeps dropping in DC gorillas and chimpanzees at random. Beepo shows up just because he’s a DC primate too. I guess sticking to DC meant nobody thought to call Grape Ape in to handle Titano (he was left out of Magilla’s Gorillas as well, using Igoo from the Herculoids instead–poor guy can’t get a break). There isn’t much of a story here. It’s just “here are all the DC primates we could fit into this story”. It also means the gang is an afterthought in their own comic.

What I think overall: There really isn’t much to this story. Sometimes “I want to do a story with…” isn’t enough unless you actually have a story.
