BW’s Daily Video> Why Ditching Floppies For Graphic Novels Won’t Work

Catch more from Comics By Perch on YouTube

Something I wrote in the comments when the video first came out (I really need to clean out my archive):

The “problem” with the floppies is that they don’t write comics in that style anymore. They write for the trade. Instead of making essentially a TV series they’ve opted to make a series of movies and then releases them as multipart episodes. What they should do is write a one or two issue story with a running subplot in their lives to tie them all together as a continuity.

Chapter By Chapter> Batman: Knightfall part 2 chapter 11

Chapter By Chapter (usually) features me reading one chapter of the selected book at a time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

PART 2: KNIGHTQUEST

Where do we stand after the previous chapter? Without too many spoilers for anyone just falling in, Not-Batman is chasing Bane around Gotham while Not-Sir Hemingford is running around England to find his kidnapped doctor. Only one chapter this week, a bit short by a page or two but I think it will progress the story enough and I’m short on time today.

I should note that Jean Paul is not winning due to his superiority. He’s winning because he had something Bruce didn’t. He knows Bane exists and has some idea of what he can do. You know that annoying nonsense about Bruce’s actual power (besides money) is “prep time”, that he could beat Galactus with prep time? At least in this case there’s something to be said for it. Plus Bane isn’t ready for someone just as violent as he is but more controlled and focused. Bane’s previous adversaries were people who talked a good game because he had the advantage, or someone completely unprepared for his tactics either because they dismissed him or didn’t know they existed until five minutes ago. Jean Paul isn’t impressed, is very much prepared, and now has Bane at a disadvantage. Let’s see what he does with it.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4

Mikey wasn’t allowed back on eBay since that day.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4

Mirage Publishing (June, 1985)

This comic is retroactively been given the name “Rescuing Master Splinter”, the name of the story arc adaptation from the 2003 4Kids cartoon. Also of interest is that the second printing uses images later used for the first NES game’s box art, after a misprint using the then active Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1. A few issues of the misprint did make it into the world. This is the original cover, though.

One final bit of trivia to pad out the homepage: This the first of three issues collected into an oversized and colorized trade back in the 1980s by First Publishing for Volume 2. This was my introduction to the Ninja Turtles comics after already becoming a fan of the show.

WRITERS/ARTISTS: Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird

BW’s Daily Article Link> Godzilla Versus Superman

Back in the 1970s and 1980s Godzilla stalked the Marvel Universe, and those events are still referenced to this day, along with the robot Red Ronin still part of the Marvel Universe. Now it’s the DC Universe’s turn as the Legendary Pictures “Monsterverse” versions of Godzilla AND King Kong are set to invade Metropolis. I’m assuming Metropolis because they’re using the multiverse and Metropolis is used to the occasional giant monkey.

Funny, Godzilla could take the Avengers by himself but needs Kong to fight the Justice League. Guess we know which is the stronger team. 😀

Jake & Leon #565> Family Visitors

Be fair, Fizzbin. It won’t take that long.

Yes, we will soon get to meet our second Francian. This should be interesting. For the humans’ sake let’s hope they aren’t double-teamed with human life questions.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week I washed my car and learned my bike is going to need more than a wash. At least my car is shiny now. I all I need is someplace to go with it.

I’m one or two comics away from having reviewed all physical comics not involving Ninja Turtles and Sonic The Hedgehog and their various friends. I’m still trying to figure out what to do on Fridays since I’m running low on ComiXology as well. Meanwhile I have plenty of novels, and the next chapter (or chapters at this rate) of Batman: Knightfall. Plus whatever interesting topics I find during the week. Have a great one, everybody!

Saturday Night Showcase> Gammera The Invincible

Godzilla proved a huge success for Toho and just like anyone else other Japanese studios were more than willing to try to make their success by ripping off what someone else already produced. Among them was Daiei Film and Gamera, The Giant Monster. While not reaching the heights of Toho’s kaiju, he has gained a strong enough level of international popularity to have more than a few films under his belt, and he doesn’t have to share with other monsters.

The original movie is not in public domain, but I did manage to find a post with a new dub so you can watch it before YouTube finds it. However the US rework, Gammera The Invincible, apparently is…or Daiei hasn’t seem to catch it. Maybe the misspelling is confusing the copywrite bots? Who knows? Tonight you have two ways to view this version. So we have a new dub, we have the original and questionable English rework, and finally the Rifftrax version of the rework, as done by Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett. This last one is the version I actually planned for a Showcase but for the sake of the non-riff crowd, or if you want to make fun of it yourself as the dub is not the best example, the first video is just the dub without the riff. Sorry I can’t help the sub crowd out but the only version on YouTube requires payment. Either way, enjoy.
