BW’s Art Soundoff 2022 #7: Technically The Finale

As a bonus issue I didn’t get to post this when I’ve posted the others, so based on my posting schedule this is taking over for the feature post today. Given I need a little extra time on this commentary to get it right at least it’s a benefit.

BW’s Daily Article Link> What You Didn’t Know About Star Trek IV’s “Bus Punk”

You know him. You love seeing him get Vulcan neck pinched. He’s the guy on the bus in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home that plays his stereo too loud on the bus until he takes a nap. However, the actor did more than just play “dead” and flip off two cultural icons. For some reason Fansided’s “Red Shirts Always Die” section has two articles about Kirk Thatcher. Learn what he did for the movie as a whole, and his other contribution to the scene besides being in it.

The MCU’s Messed Up Magic System

The term “magic system” in writing or RPGs isn’t exclusive to magic. Technology, superpowers, alchemy, and other forms of science that doesn’t quite match up to real world physics can be a different kind of magic. In fact some of our science today might be mistaken for magic for someone from days before Christ. This is one of the things that pushes the nonsense “ancient alien” theories.

There is however a science to the magic system if you don’t want your character to be considered overpowered, thus turning your hero into a Mary/Gary Stu or a villain so powerful that there should be no way for the hero to win. It’s the struggle where the drama comes from, and if you don’t do it right then the tension is gone. Some time ago The Closer Look posted a video I brought up here about the failings of a video game with a bad magic system versus, but now he goes into the poorly thought out magic system of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. However, he goes over other failures of magic and technology being thought out in other MCU movies like Endgame as well as examples of the magic system done right and how powers out of nowhere should be handled, using the teachings of Brandon Sanderson as a guide. It’s a long video and I don’t have much to add, but its too long for a daily post as you really need to pay attention if you’re designing a magic or superscience system for your story.

BW’s Daily Video> Pitching Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man Films

Catch more from Pitch Meeting on YouTube

You can see my review of Spider-Man: Homecoming. I just don’t see MCU Spidey as a proper adaptation and I have no interest in the other two.

Chapter By Chapter> TekWar chapters 19 & 20

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at a time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

In the previous chapter Jake got a new partner whether he wants her or not. He’s a detective hot on a case. She’s an android with all the answers. It sounds like a TV show…oh wait, it was. Not the show based on these books. Look up Mann And Machine some time. I barely remember it myself.

Are our heroes still in escape mode or is it time for her knowledge of her of Beth and her father (being a Beth android I call Bethdroid to tell them apart while explaining things) and his connections to get to solving this mystery? It seems I’m running out of intro fodder and we’re only half-way through this book, so let’s get to it.

So…you know how I usually do these intros before reading the chapter to add authenticity? Well, the book did it to me again, having one chapter flow into the other to the point that it could have just been one chapter. In fact maybe part of this chapter should be part of the previous chapter. Let’s get into the review so I can explain.
