Dawn Of The DC Universe…Another Dud?

I hate the fact that I’m accidentally promoting this event…given that DC themselves has a solicit and not much else. No trailer, no teaser…I’m not even sure why they have a YouTube channel except to push their movies. In light of something that will come up later that makes even less sense, but their new parent company doesn’t care about the comics any more than Marvel Studios does so those of us who comment on such things already care more than the stewards of this universe. And yet I’m not even going to bother looking at the titles in this new case of Eventitis because if they don’t care, why should I?

Instead I want to talk about how the 2023 year long event “Dawn Of The DC Universe” by nature already is hampered by all the problems DC Comics has had lately as a comic book publisher. I expect David Zaslav to not care. He’s a TV guy. Jim Lee is a comic guy and his lack of caring does bother me. Still, the problems are quite easy to see why this won’t work in bringing back comic fans…it’s not like it’s going to matter, and that’s important in maintaining a series, never mind a shared universe of multiple titles. Just as DC is doing a subpar job promoting this event on their own, so too have they been doing a subpar job overall.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> G.I. Joe Classics #1

“Hurry, Cobra wants to keep us from learning who published what when!”

G.I. Joe Classics #1

Okay, this is where I usually post the publisher and cover date. I wish I was certain! Look, this is a reprint of the first Marvel comic (June, 1982) by IDW Publishing (cover date I have no @#$%@# clue). I usually go to the Grand Comics Database but they don’t recognize a G.I. Joe Classics from IDW. The only IDW listing is G.I. Joe: The Complete Collection, which I think is some kind of omnibus. It is free to read as of this writing (and with a better reader than either of Amazon’s Kindle online readers but not as good as the now killed comiXology online reader…thanks, Amazon!) on IDW’s site, with a sell date of 5/21/2015 but that’s all I could find.

I’m using the comiXology posting because I’m moving the digital library review to Thursday and the short series from my physical collection on Friday. That means I go back and forth between physical and digital comics, which works for me personally. Anyway, here’s the credits since I can at least trust them. I think.

Until I stop hearing how “terrible” Superman is these will continue to pop up intermittently. That’s not the same as “I don’t like the character”, but the reasons I hear are wrong. Also, the people writing Superman comics and making Superman TV shows and movies need to hear this stuff.

Watch The Mystery Science Theater Turkey Day Marathon 2022

I’m posting this now so you can watch it live tomorrow. Or if you missed it hopefully this will be a replay that’s available for many years to come and not deleted once the event is over. I’m hoping they add some of the new paywall Gizmoplex episodes in with fan favorites of the original three (four?) versions.

BW’s Daily Article Link> Proof Marvel Studios Doesn’t Care About Marvel Comics

If you were under the suspicion that Marvel Studios couldn’t give a lick about the source material, then we have proof you were absolutely right. Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore has come out and said for a fact that he only wants creators who know nothing about the comics and will just make movies that doesn’t care what the source material does. Meaning the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now more like the Marvel Namesake Universe, despite relative accuracy to the comics being one of the reasons the MCU was so celebrated until recently.

It’s more proof that there’s a pecking order in storytelling media and comics are too low on that list to even get novel-level accuracy. At least those changes (usually) are for the differences between formats. This is turning the comic characters into a bunch of namesakes…and they wonder why comic fans–THE REASON YOU HAVE THESE NAMES AND CONCEPTS TO MAKE MOVIES WITH BECAUSE THEY LOVED THE CHARACTERS IN THE COMICS SO MUCH–are pissed at them for ruining their favorite characters. If you don’t care about these characters we love, why should we care about your crappy movie? Apparently Moore isn’t a fan of anything, or maybe he’d think about what would happened if this happened to characters from a media type he actually thinks matters. This is what happens when you let media snobs take control of adaptations of media they look down on.
