BW’s Art Soundoff 2022 #6: The Rules Make It Fun

Check out [Insert Art], which is apparently the name he went with. So…somebody make a channel called Artistic Philanthropy and credit me. Not sure what the channel would be but I’m sure someone can come up with something cool.

EDIT: Just because I brought it up, I found out the “Shadowlands” episode is on Disney Junior’s YouTube channel. So be inspired!

The Insane Kings Quest Novelization Strategy Guide

Created by Sierra On-Line, the King’s Quest game series has a very large fanbase due to its humor, its character, and its utterly ridiculous “moon logic” puzzles that requires you to think outside the box and down the hall to your left. Or is it right? I’ve tried playing a couple different installments of this game. We had King’s Quest IV in the computer room at our high school and I think somebody I knew had King’s Quest II, but even my form of creative crazy isn’t enough to really connect with these games.

I do, however, find novelisations interesting. What was changed because of the transition between media, the latest available version of the script, and the whims of the author makes it a unique experience beyond “movie/game in book form”.

In the following video, Dave “Doggans” Ganssle does a deep dive into The King’s Quest Companion, a combination strategy guide and novelization that despite giving you the answer to all the puzzles you couldn’t figure out somehow finds a way to go even crazier than the games the book is based on, going as far as King’s Quest VII in the final edition. I hope you find this video as interesting as I did even if you never played the games. The decisions made are certainly unique for a strategy guide.

BW’s Daily Article Link> Jason David Frank Passes Away

September 4, 1973 – November 19, 2022

I didn’t do a posting for this because after the Jimmy Fallon hoax I wanted to get proper confirmation. Well, we have part of it anyway. It’s been confirmed that Jason David Frank, who rose to fame as the multi-suited Power Ranger Tommy Oliver (having been in more versions of the team than anyone else) has died. What hasn’t been confirmed as I post this however is the cause of death, TMZ reporting it was suicide but I haven’t heard a definite on this.

He was the same age I am, but accomplished a lot more. Frank played Tommy in numerous incarnations of the Power Rangers franchise, starting with the mind controlled enemy turned ally and leader of the team in the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers and almost had his own show if the original plans for what became VR Troopers had happened. Instead he returned as Tommy later that first season and continued in that role until the first half of Power Rangers Turbo, making the occasional cameo and taking on the mentor/Black Ranger role in Power Rangers Dino Thunder. HIs last role will be in the indie film Legend Of The White Dragon, a Power Rangers inspired movie-turned-miniseries featuring past Ranger actors in a new role. He also created his own martial arts style and was an MMA fighter.

My heart goes out to his family and friends who will surely miss him more than even fans will. He joins Thuy Trang, who died tragically in a car crash in 2001, around the same time as Frank’s brother in an unrelated incident I have no info on. At least he has someone waiting for him on the other side.

Chapter By Chapter> TekWar chapter 18

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at a time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Our last installment required two chapters as Jake was introduced to Beth, or a mostly-accurate simulation. I’m thinking this installment will only require the one, but that’s what I thought when I started chapter 16.

We’re about half way through the book now but being a somewhat long book 35 chapters with 307 pages in my copy–we’re starting today on page 151) I’m betting we’re going to get into the mystery part of this mystery now. Of course that depends on how much The Future padding we get in this story. It’s been the only consistent flaw. I’m all for flavor but when the information really doesn’t serve the story you have to consider how much of it is worth the extra page space. Some of it has been fun but some of it has also been a distraction of unnecessary information. Let’s see what we get this time.
