BW’s Daily Article Link: The New Mutants Movie’s Adaptation Errors

Wrong comic, but I’ve never had one of their comics so nothing of them is in the media library. Not that it matters because according to creator Bob McLeod the movie based on his co-creation The New Mutants, an X-Men spinoff comic, messed up his character designs with the actor and costume choices. And his last name. He didn’t even care that they made it a horror movie, but they got races and hairstyles all wrong. I’m not surprised they got a character’s height wrong; look who they got to play Wolverine. Instead a black (I think because I haven’t read the comic) character is turned white, another redhead loses their red hair (Hollywood has a silent war on redheaded characters lately…Black Widow got lucky), and someone else has the wrong hair. It’s like these directors don’t care about the comics. Oh that’s right…they don’t!

My Favorite Intros: The Centurions

It may not be fair to compare Fangface, an early comedy show from Ruby-Spears, with a later action intro like The Centurions, but honest any of their comedy shows that went for the exposition narration rather than a proper theme song (some of which were actually decent) was the same way throughout their run, so it’s not like they improved in that department. However, when it came to action shows they actually had people who knew what they were doing.

The Centurions was actually not one of those shows based on a toy. In fact, the toy was based on the cartoon, though two new Centurions were added in season two to benefit the toys, one of the ways syndicated shows have to make money to be able to make a show. It’s not really as big a  problem anymore since today shows are bought by networks to benefit their own ad revenue, or streaming services looking to boost their subscriber base, but the toy revenue and other merchandising still helps. So how did this show do the exposition opening right?

BW’s Daily Article Link: Netflix For Free

Well, not completely. However Netflix is opening a few sample shows (nothing I currently care to see) up to hopefully draw in a few new subscribers. Apparently they think that includes a Boss Baby series and not The Ultraman or Mystery Science Theater 3000 (though the relaunched episodes are airing on IFC along with the original series). Although I do notice a lack of She-Ra on there. 🙂 Who knows, maybe it will lead to something closer to Peacock, Funimation, or VuDu in how it handles the paywall versus letting a few ad-sponsored videos loose? Hey, I can dream.

My Not-So-Favorite Intros: Fangface

I love a lot of Ruby-Spears content. From Centurions to Mega Man the team of Joe Ruby and Ken Spears produced a lot of really good action shows, and some decent comedies and superhero parodies. Not on any of those lists is Fangface, one of their first shows, featuring a werewolf who fights monsters alongside their teenage friends. Even I’m seeing the Scooby-Doo parallels with this show and I don’t immediately list every “teens solve a mystery” as a Scooby-Doo knockoff. There are quite a few but I don’t necessarily agree with the full list.

Fangface was one of their earliest shows, airing between 1978 and 1980, the second season introducing a nephew with the same curse. Recently my reviewer colleague The Rowdy Reviewer re-posted his old review of the show and that’s what inspired me to look up the intro…which is just as unimpressive as I remember.

BW’s Daily Video: Shout Factory TV On Star Trek Day

For more info check out Shout Factory TV’s article on the event. It’s odd that they’re carrying this, presumably even on Pluto TV (owned by Paramount and thus ViacomCBS now) since they just launched a Star Trek channel, which is currently focused on The Next Generation and the occasional preview of whatever is on CBS All Access.

And as I was scheduling this post Shout Factory just emailed a schedule.

  • 9:00 a.m. – The Captains
  • 11:00 a.m. – The Captains Close-Up: William Shatner
  • 12:00 p.m. – The Captains Close-Up: Patrick Stewart
  • 1:00 p.m. – The Captains Close-Up: Avery Brooks
  • 2:00 p.m. – The Captains Close-Up: Kate Mulgrew
  • 3:30 p.m. – The Captains Close-Up: Scott Bakula
  • 4:00 p.m. – William Shatner’s Chaos On The Bridge
  • 5:30 p.m. – William Shatner’s Get A Life!
  • 7:00 p.m. – What We Left Behind: Looking Back At Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
  • 9:30 p.m. – Backlot: San Diego Comic-Con 2019: What We Left Behind: Looking Back At Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Panel

I don’t know what time zone that’s in. I’m assuming eastern but double check on Tuesday, September 8th, 2020 where you usually watch Shout Factory TV’s main live streaming channel.
