So it’s supposed to be the Sentry’s story but he’s stuffed in a corner. And who’s the guy on the right?

Tony meets with the Illuminati (a group of heroes who got together for a group problem-solving session around this time; members also included Reed Richards, Professor X, Doctor Strange, Prince Namor, Black Bolt, and I thought T’Challa but I could be wrong) to fill in the details about the new Avengers team, the missing escapees, and to see what they know about the Sentry. Later the other Avengers track down The Wrecker, who has gone to reclaim his team’s costumes and weapons from a supervillain memorabilia collector. It isn’t going well. Meanwhile Iron Man and Captain America meet with the Sentry in a cave to show him that his wife is actually still alive and to introduce him to Paul Jenkins, creator of the Sentry comic books.

What they got right: At least the Avengers are continuing to go after the escapees. The Sentry’s backstory originally wasn’t in the main line but one of the imprints so this could be that the original comic and the real Marvel universe have different ideas of the Sentry…I guess. The fight was good and I’m sure there would be supervillain memorabilia collectors, and him actually play acting in the costumes I sadly also believe is possible. I think I’m reaching on this one, so let’s get to…

What they got wrong: Bendis is not as funny as he thinks he is. The attempts at jokes fall flat and he seem to understand how Spidey’s quipping works. Also, for a storyline about the Sentry, the first issue barely has anything to do with him. I could understand the collector getting one of Wrecker’s spare costumes, but the Wrecking Crew to my knowledge only have one version of their enchanted weapon each, so how did this guy get Wrecker’s enchanted crowbar? Wouldn’t that be locked up somewhere after the Crew was busted? Anyone else creeped out that the Wrecker wants the teen to early twenties aged girl to stay in the bikini because he just broke out of prison? Seriously, Bendis? Wrecker looks to be 30-40 years old. I’m 47 and I know that’s taking it too far.

Recommendation: Good ideas ruined by the person writing them. Still recommending a pass.
