Jake & Leon #467: Herodude & Enemies #1 part 10

Unless Bendis is writing him. Then he’s just annoying.

This may take longer for me to work on but I’ve actually learned a few things based on working on it so it was worth it. Next time should be the final chapter of the story. Hope you all liked it. I needed a diversion from the drama, which was the only thing worth talking about and I like to limit that whenever possible. I just want to know if the story’s good.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week the same issues that led to me missing Friday’s post also cut into the current email project. I also linked to a nice article about mistakes made during clutter maintenance that I may suffer from.

Speaking of Friday’s post, it’s an Art Of Storytelling that would have fit perfectly into the intro discussion I’ve had all week so I may shelve it for now and continue the game talk or go ahead and do it. We’ll see what happens come Friday if I actually post from that series. I’m going to have a few distractions this week as well so I’ll try to put something good in here but I may also dip into the video postings that inspire me to say something rather than the longer commentaries. If I can put a longer article in here I will, and we do have the next chapter of Doctor Who: The Time Travellers to review. So I can at least promise there will be reasons to check in this week. Have a good week and stay safe, folks!

Saturday Night Showcase: Heavy Metal War: Rectified–Making G1 Transformers Cartoon

“Heavy Metal War” is the final episode of season one of the original The Transformers cartoon. It features the debut of the Constructicons, Megatron cheating to win a battle, and is considered one of the best season one episodes for a reason. It is also the episode with the most backstage material–script, storyboards, history, and even deleted scenes with no animation but full-recorded and edited dialog. It’s a good example of just how the original show was produced.

You may remember Chris McFeely from Transformers: The Basics and a recent video about the pre-Transformers attempts at making Transformers. That video was recorded as part of the virtual TF Nation convention podcast this year. In tonight’s video he posts footage from an earlier live appearance at the UK Transformers convention, a panel in which he collects all the information on “Heavy Metal War” and shares it with the audience. The video includes additional editing for our sake, and if this isn’t Saturday Night Showcase enough for you there will be a link to where you can watch the finished episode for yourself, which I cannot currently embed here. Hope you find something new you didn’t before about how the first season of the cartoon was produced.

BW’s Daily Article Link: The Scrapped Watchmen Movie

Before Zack Snyder made his Watchmen, a movie more in-line with his view of superheroes, another attempt at the movie was made. Recently test footage of that version, directed by David Hayter and featuring Iain Glen as Nite Owl (though the footage doesn’t include his supersuit sadly) and Ray Stevenson as Rorschach. For those of you who saw the movie that was made, who did the scene better?

My Favorite Intros: Captain Caveman And The Teen Angels

I wasn’t planning on a theme week but that seems to be how we ended up. First I looked at Fangface, a terrible intro from Ruby-Spears. I followed it up with The Centurions, a good example from the same company on how to do a narrated exposition. However, that was an adventure show and the other show was a comedic adventure show. While getting cleaned up for bed last night I happened to think of a good example of a comedic adventure, but not from Ruby-Spears. None of them were even good, including Plastic Man. No, the best example of what Fangface should have done it came a year earlier…and from their former bosses.

In 1978 Hanna-Barbera gave us Captain Caveman And The Teen Angels. While it still borrows from the Scooby formula I think they changed enough things to ignore that. The Angels didn’t always fight fake monsters and just straight up solved a mystery. Plus they had a superhero. The show began as one of the segments of Laff-A-Lympics before getting their own show in season three…at least according to Wikipedia (question the source). I first saw it as part of USA Network’s Cartoon Express if not in syndication or after getting its own show on ABC so I wouldn’t know. I was pretty young then, about five years old when the show started. Cavey has since showed up in a couple different Flintstones series and most recently in an altered form in the Scoob! movie. So how did they do the same thing Fangface did and get it right?
