BW’s Daily Article Link: The Ninth Doctor Returns To The TARDIS

When Doctor Who returned to television Christopher Eccleston was the first Doctor a lot of kids had ever seen. He remains a very popular Doctor, despite having the shorted official run at one season. (Semi-officially Richard E. Grant only had one serial when the official website tried to revive the series as an animated webseries.) However, due to stuff that was going on behind the scenes like poor treatment by the BBC and some family issue all leading to his becoming anorexic and other issues he parted ways and hasn’t gone near the series.

That’s why it’s such a big deal that Eccleston is returning as the Ninth Doctor in a series of audio dramas for Big Finish. Based on continuity I assume this means more Rose Tyler and possibly Captain Jack as well, so it’s not all good news, unless we get lucky and it’s before he met Rose or while she was hanging out with the family like Moffat had his Companions do from time to time. However, fans of the Ninth will be happy to see him–or at least hear him–as the Doctor again. I know I will.

Jake & Leon #463: Herodude & Enemies #1 part 6

Especially if they deal with Spider-Man on a regular basis.

Running late meant I screwed up on Leon’s eyes. Figures.

In this week’s Clutter Report the power outage from Tuesday that led to no articles on Wednesday left me with little entertainment. (It was too dark to read and everything else required electricity. If it wasn’t for dad’s laptop, since mine didn’t want to turn on for some reason–it’s working now though–and season one MacGuyver DVDs we wouldn’t have had much to do…until his battery ran out.) So this week I wanted to put some movies on my tablet, which led to some cleaning of my backup files. Turn a negative into a positive I guess.

Well, I got an Art Of Storytelling in last week finally, maybe this week I’ll get that Finally Watched in? We’ll have to wait and see. Enjoy the week as best you can!

Saturday Night Showcase: Danger 5

Every now and then I bring you guys something a bit…odd, just to make sure I’m not the only one seeing it. Although if you’re from Australia I’m sure you have seen this (though with various international rights issues I don’t know if you’ll see this in Australia). Danger 5 is a rather…interesting bit of “well, that happened”. The 2014 comedy series look at a World War II series if it were a typical 60s crimefighting show, just with Hitler as the constantly escaping villain. In season 2 the series jumped time to the 1980s as Hitler somehow survived and cooked up more crazy schemes, drawing the team back together.

The show focuses on the five member team: Jackson from the USA, Tucker from Australia, Ilsa from Russia, Claire from Britain and Pierre from Europe. (I just copy/pasted that from the fan wiki for time.) Sent by their boss, the eagle-headed Colonel Chestbridge to uncover the latest wacky scheme the Nazis are up to and put a stop to it. Oh yeah…and kill Hitler. In this first episode Adolf’s flunky decides to play Carmen Sandiego and steal some monuments for Hitler’s birthday party. What follows is really weird. Yes, the eagle-headed colonel is the least weird thing here. Enjoy the madness of…”I Danced For Hitler”!

“Yesterday’s” Comic D4VE #1

“No, I’ve never been a rapper. Why do ask?”

D4VE #1

Monkeybrain Comics (2013)

Note that this is no longer available on comiXology through Monkeybrain as the company disbanded. I only have it because I had gotten it at the time. IDW picked it up but I don’t know if they included the backstory of the comic’s creation in their version.

Art Of Storytelling: Linear Video Game Stories

Dang it, I’m getting one of these teased articles done!

I was there for the early days of video games. I remember not only when the manuals were the only place a video game’s story was being told, I remember when it was as simple as “here’s your goal, now here are the controls”. Then one day I saw this.

This game was the first time I saw what’s become known as “cutscenes”. Actually, that’s not true. Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man both have skits after a few levels while Jr. Pac-Man (a game I only saw once so I only just learned this) has a short story of forbidden love between a Pac and a Ghost, but the NES version of Ninja Gaiden is the first time I saw a game form a full-on story like this. As you play through the game you move the story forward with your victory.

Since that time the full potential of video games as a storytelling tool may or may not have been fully unlocked but various ways to do so have been uncovered. We’ll go over other, more interactive ways in later articles. I want to look at the more linear storytelling style and we can deal with sandboxes, moon logic, and decision trees another time. Let’s focus instead on getting to the next cutscene.
