Jake & Leon #459: Herodude & Enemies part 2

He’s secretly bankrolled by the dental council.

Not a bad design for something I came up with as I was drawing it.

Over at The Clutter Reports I posted some more of my comics for sale. I linked to reviews from this site except for Liefeld’s Galactica. Only a fraction of that run wasn’t horrible but some completest will want it. Or someone who reviews bad comics for a blog or wanting to be the next Linkara. More will be coming.

So tomorrow is my birthday (47 years old and little to show for it), and I have decided to be lazy this year, despite all the time I missed this year due to fighting burnout and my old computer dying. Tuesday will be the Justice League Unlimited review in the daily link spot and the Marvel comic review in the regular afternoon slot. Our next Chapter By Chapter review of Doctor Who: The Time Travelers will be out Tuesday as well. I’m hoping for a Finally Watched this week, and I did the previous installment of Art Of Storytelling so I could do the next one, as we discuss linear versus non-linear storytelling in video games. This will not specifically cover any one genre of video game, which I’ll come back to in the future, but simply examine the debate to find the positives and negatives. I haven’t decided yet if it will be one article or two for each type. We’ll find out by Thursday as I keep trying to be done a day early in case I try to start the Patreon again. Also, the new Peacock service is going to be free (at least for now) so I can do an overview article of a new streaming service for a change so I’ll try that.

Stay safe everyone. And look for the online conventions. There’s another one this week, as we’ll see. As far as one of the Free Comic Book Days we’ll see if I get there. That may affect my intended schedule. Have a good week.

Saturday Night Showcase: Jedi Temple Challenge

Game shows for adults tend to be either physical games or trivia games. Game shows for kids are more likely to combine the two, with a combination of cerebral and physical challenges for the kids to overcome. I think that makes them a bit more exciting while the adults’ are more relaxing.

Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge is a new game show for kids and combines thinking and physical skills. Ahmed Best, best known as Jar Jar Binks, portrays Jedi Master and instructor Kelleran Beq. Joined by droids AD-3 (voiced by Mary Holland and costumed by Gordon Tarpley) and LX-R5 (operated by Michael McMaster…fitting name), they lead three teams of two Padawans, either friends or siblings, through three challenge. Each team is eliminated until the final challenge to earn the title of Jedi Knight. But can they avoid the spirit of the Dark Side (Sam Witwer) that might tempt them to cheat? If so they may hear Yoda himself (Frank Oz) proclaim them Jedi Knights! Enjoy!

ConnectiCon At Home

Just a reminder that the death plague quarantine has forced ConnectiCon, an event I visited and made videos about for years (look in my “What Interests Me” archives in the sidebar under “convention reports”) has gone online via Twitch. It streams from 3PM to 1 AM Eastern Time, complete with a virtual rave. There will be recordings of old panels (including one I already covered in BW Panelling) and new panels run at home. Check out the ConnectiCon at home page for the full schedule, go to Twitch directly or the Discord server to interact with the at home panels, and have a good time. I probably won’t show up since I’ll be a bit busy and I don’t have a Twitch or Discord account but I will try to listen in if I have a moment.

(Posted an hour before the stream begins, and there will still be a Saturday Night Showcase tonight.)

Art Of Storytelling: An Overview Of Gaming As Storyteller

This is not the start of a new sub-series though I will go over the various types of games in future installments. However, I can’t do that without a proper overview of games as storytelling methods, something you think is recent but has actually been a storyteller for a lot longer. Since the days of “Cowboys And Indians” or “Cops And Robbers” (and I’m not sure you can play either anymore without some adult having a fit) and before, when kids in Merry Ol’ England probably played “Knights And Dragons” backstory was at least needed to set up the premise and rules of the game. Candy Land may not have a deep lore to it (I don’t think it needs to, do you?) but there is a goal, a name for various locations, and other forms of worldbuilding. Even Pac-Man has a premise. You’re a yellow food freak trying to clear a maze while four ghost-like monsters try to eat you. It was only later that we got the various lores from the cartoon, the games themselves, a record I own, and the rebooted game histories.

In the future I’ll be discussing each form of game, some of which have a video game and physical counterpart so sometimes video games will have a section for themselves and sometimes not. I will go over how each tells a story, though for some genres (say, puzzle games), the discussion stops here. This is a general list of game types and how it tells a story, only most of which will be further examined in later installments. If there’s any you think I really should get to first or focus on, or if I missed one, let me know. With that, let’s get started.
