BW’s Daily Video: Forgotten Film Franchises

Oh I don’t know. Charlie Chan could get a reboot with an actual Chinese man playing Charlie Chan, a more traditional-minded Chinese detective helping out in America and abroad. It also had a cartoon, The Amazing Chan And The Chan Clan, which focused more on Chan’s kids solving the mysteries, ranging from teenager to elementary school-aged kids. Considering in the movies his “#1 son” was maybe in his twenties (I didn’t really watch the films because I don’t follow many mysteries) that’s rather odd. Also, Blondie movies plays every Saturday on the Movies! channel if you have that available.

DisneyFilm Versus Canon

I see this discussion still goes on.

During my computer issues a new bit of commentary from someone with in the Star Wars writing group posted some rather controversial statements. That’s nothing new of course but this one speaks to a questionable approach to storytelling and franchises, and something that needs to be discussed. At issue is his statements about canon. This one in particular is what gets me.

To me that’s a terrible approach. If you go into something treating it as fake you’ve already lost the audience. Yes, good stories are important, but to ignore canon…actually the problem is continuity more than canon since canon is pretty obvious; it’s the movies and the last three cartoons. (I’m not sure where Forces Of Destiny lies but Clone Wars, Rebels, and, Resistance are canon.) The question is whether or not something makes sense in that particular continuity. At least he notes that the creators need to keep that straight but if they’re doing it wrong we as the audience know it because that continuity is important to us for different reasons. Andre Einherjar over at Midnight’s Edge goes over the full Twitter thread, an article from IO9’s “Gizmodo” site, and actual fan complaints and tries to find neutral ground while bringing the appropriate parties to task for the current trend. Since I’m not just simply posting the video in the daily special, you know I have a few thoughts of my own.

Chapter By Chapter> Spider-Man: Carnage In New York ch. 17

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Only a few chapters left to go. It’s time for the epic Spider-Man/Carnage fight to end the novel, and given how chapters are spaced in this book it’s going to take a few weeks reading it this way. It’s the only potential downside to the Chapter By Chapter format but it’s not so bad that I have to review multiple chapters at once like a few other books I’ve looked at during this series. So let’s get this fight started!

One upside to these images is that I don’t have to struggle near the end of the book to make the intro long enough for the homepage.

BW’s Daily Article Link: Here’s Your Darn Snyder Cut

I am not a fan of what Zack did with Man Of Steel, a decent superhero movie but a terrible Superman movie. I can’t even bring my self to watch Batman V. Superman because I reject it on concept and nobody whose opinion I respect has anything nice to say about it in detailed reviews. However, from a creative POV I’m not sure what I’ve heard about what they did with Justice League, which is still on my DVR awaiting a Finally Watched article. That didn’t stop Snyder fans from demanding the Snyder cut of the movie be released, as if it’s somehow going to be better (more coherent…not from what I’ve heard about Dawn Of Justice but maybe). Well, they’re finally getting their wish, and Bounding Into Comics breaks down what the “Snyder Cut” actually is and why it was demanded. Does this mean we can finally shut up about it?
