Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
Only a few chapters left to go. It’s time for the epic Spider-Man/Carnage fight to end the novel, and given how chapters are spaced in this book it’s going to take a few weeks reading it this way. It’s the only potential downside to the Chapter By Chapter format but it’s not so bad that I have to review multiple chapters at once like a few other books I’ve looked at during this series. So let’s get this fight started!
One upside to these images is that I don’t have to struggle near the end of the book to make the intro long enough for the homepage.
It’s the beginning of the fight but once again the story flashes back a few minutes so we can see Spidey’s rescue from last chapter from his perspective rather than the man he saved. The rescue hurt Spidey’s shoulder a bit because of course the hero has to fight slightly injured. It adds to the drama. We also see that Carnage still has the vial, but in a pouch formed from the symbiote. There was one portion of the fight outside the building I had to re-read because it wasn’t clear to me at the time how far Carnage was from the ground before Spider-Man snagged him…by standing on the side of the building like it was the ground, which is pretty cool. The chapter also notes that Spider-Man can climb down a wall faster than Carnage can. Venom was able to duplicate Spidey’s powers because it bonded to Peter but as a piece of Venom, which is what the Carnage symbiote is, he didn’t seem to get any of those powers. So much for passing things on to your kids. I guess Venom and Carnage’s faces vaguely resembling Spider-Man’s mask is a coincidence?
Then Carnage heads for the park and the homeless feeding event. I’m ready to say I called it. What happens next? According to the image for the next chapter we’re going back to Aunt Man and Mary Jane. Is that a good idea? Find out with me next time. Or read ahead. That’s up to you.
