How To Bore Your Audience With Cliches

Will Ferrel is a good actor but the movies he does often follows a formula I just don’t care for. It’s the same dumb idiot trying to live in a world of slightly smarter idiots. It’s like a Daffy Duck cartoon done wrong. You know, the ones where he plays parodies of characters like Buck Rogers or Sherlock Holmes. So I admittedly have not watched Homes And Watson (speaking of Sherlock Holmes parodies) nor do I ever plan to.

However, Henry of The Closer Look did and apparently this comedy wasn’t so much bad as boring. Being boring is worse than being bad because at least bad can be fun for the wrong reasons. In this video he goes over the film and it’s misuse of clichés. There is a scene of someone throwing up so don’t watch this while eating. Also some swearing.

BW’s Art Soundoff 2018 #8: Schedules And Other Blockades

Adding to this is that YouTube wants you to use their Studio Beta, and now puts an important feature exclusive to it, but I’m on Vista. Vista-friendly browsers (because everyone decided to follow Microsoft and give the finger to anyone who can’t afford to upgrade to 7, 8, or 10) cannot run Studio Beta so I can’t use it. If they shut down Classic I’m going to have yet another barrier to overcome. Sometimes I wonder if the universe is trying to make me give up stuff I should be able to do, not just the stuff not ready to be done.

New Design Sonic Movie Trailer Drops

Last year a trailer was released for a live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie, and fans didn’t like it. The main source of complaints was Sonic’s design, an attempt to make him look more like a real hedgehog that smacked face first into the uncanny valley and then kept headbutting the darn thing. In short it was ugly, and the internet made no bones about it. Fans made both mocking images and videos as well as trying to offer better designs. There were also some issues with Jim Carrey’s version of Dr. Robotnik, and we now have confirmation that they’re going with the old US name instead of the original Japanese name Sega Of America and various comics and cartoons since have switched over to. I still don’t know why they have to go the Smurfs route and set it in our world in a live-action movie.

Well, a new trailer has finally come out, showcasing Sonic’s redesign. Yes, the creators actually heard the fans and what has to be a first in years for Hollywood or comics actually decided to take their complaints serious and fix things. This new trailer shows the redesigned Sonic and explains more of the movie’s general plot. Apparently they actually were paying attention.

BW’s Morning Trailer: “Scoob!” Teaser Trailer Drops

I’ll explain in tomorrow’s Art Soundoff why there’s no Art Soundoff today. In the meantime let’s see the teaser trailer for Scoob!.

It doesn’t look bad necessarily (although again they seem to have decided that Blue Falcon and Dynomutt are fictional characters in Scooby’s world despite MULTIPLE CROSSOVERS BETWEEN DYNOMUTT AND SCOOBY-DOO IN CANON!!!!!) but I still don’t understand why they didn’t use the same voice actors who are still portraying these characters in current shows and direct-to-video movies or why we have yet another origin for the gang. Is anybody paying attention to their own franchise? Still, it might be a good movie and I kind of still want to see it depending on what the full trailer eventually shows us but that I still have issues with it. Also…

…is there a downgrade on Scooby’s fur texture? At least it’s a cartoon this time.

Chapter By Chapter: The Merry Adv Of Robin Hood part six ch. 1

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Remember, the book is in public domain. Download or read the ebook online legally and for free at Project Gutenberg, Google Books or the Internet Archive among other sites, or check out the audiobook from LibriVox. You can also use a print copy. In either case my copy may not match up with yours chapter-wise. Follow along with the very-long subtitle. For this chapter:

Part Six

In Which It Is Told How Queen Eleanor Sent For Robin Hood To Come To The Court At Famous London Town And How Robin Came At Her Bidding. Likewise It Is Told How King Henry Chased Robin Through The Land, Yet Caught Him Not

I’m admittedly curious about this one. Granted I’ve been enjoying this book even if it reveals the secret dark side of young Robin Hood and brings his hero status into question. After all this came out well before all the more famous portrayals we know and remember this is the toned down version. I have to wonder how bad the original legends were. However, why would Robin, an outlaw, agree to meet with the queen when he should have known the king was already annoyed with him based on what the Sheriff told him and the fact that he’s been hunting deer the king claims as his despite not planning to anything with them. Or maybe it’s my lack of geographic knowledge and Sherwood Forest is closer than I think? Sure, I could look it up since both London and Sherwood Forest are real places and I just looked. They are not. With that out of the way let’s get on with the book.
