BW’s Art Soundoff 2019 #7: Having The Guts To Fail

Since I mentioned it in the video here’s Hiroshi Paradox’s entry on commenting on other’s work.

Jake & Leon #423: Art Soundoff part 2

Paying a comic character is easy. If I try drawing money in real life though that will earn you prison time.

Since this was for Art Soundoff I wanted to discuss the characters although I did it in my first Art Soundoff year when I drew the characters out. I also have the panel off-kilter to show Max is holding the camera by hand but I couldn’t find space to work it into the dialog.

For the record, Max I use to make fun of dumb marketing ideas. Bill and Meredith are “normal” people who don’t deal in geek culture, Beth is the POV of a kid, and Fizzbin the ultimate outsider. None of them are an aspect of me so much as characters for Jake and Leon to interact with who are decent people and more friends.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week I brought out the last of the Micromaster Combiners from Transformers Universe with a look at the Micromaster Constructicons. I still have more figures from the first Universe line to go through but this is it for Micromasters. Next week it’s another clearing project.

Meanwhile this week we’re nearing the end of The Merry Adventures Of Robin Hood while the many MANY intros of the Transformers hits the second part of the Unicron Trilogy. We’ll also be reviewing the last issue of Robotech: The Macross Saga I own (but not the last one made–my collection is incomplete), which means my next Robotech video review is going to be late like the Clash Of The Bionoids review and that makes me sad. Too many projects and not enough time. Additionally we’re getting close to Christmas content AND the 11th anniversary of BW Media Spotlight and that’s going to draw time away as well. Somehow I’ll get through it all.

2019’s Other Art Soundoff Participants

For the past few years I’ve been taking part in the Art Soundoff challenge, a podcast-style journaling challenge where you take maybe 15 minutes to discuss your art day and what your thinking about. If you’re here then you’ve probably seen mine for 2019, posted on weekdays due to BW Media Spotlight’s posting schedule. However I’m not the only one taking part.

As per usual I want to take a moment to highlight all the other participants in this year’s challenge, started by Lean Into Artcast hosts Jerzy Drozd and Rob Stenzinger, and featuring more than the three of us this year, where last year there weren’t that many participating. One of the participants has opted to switch her journals to unlisted due to…stuff…but is still making them, which is fine. The point is to help the creator think more about their own artistic approach. The rest have at least not told me to not include them so here’s everyone using the #ArtSoundoff hashtag on Twitter this November and discussing their craft publicly. This year many of them went with anchor.fm for their host, which proved a bit of a challenge finding the link that I could use with my host, but luckily I’m resourceful.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Batman: Arkham City #1

I actually picked this up when it first came out but for whatever reason opted to wait until the whole miniseries came out. The only one I ended up being able to get was issue #5 so it never got reviewed. I still have them somewhere so if I find #5 I’ll review that knowing I’m missing everything in between. This issue is just next in the comiXology library rotation.

The Many MANY Intros Of Transformers: Armada/Micron Legend

I’ve seen this one translated as “Micron Legend” and “Legend Of The Microns“, so I went with the shorter translation for the article title. Of course we in the US know it as Transformers Armada, the first of what’s been dubbed the “Unicron Trilogy”, three series intended to exist in the same continuity. I’ll come back to that in a few installments. The toyline debuted my favorite addition to Transformers toys and one I miss seeing…the Mini-Cons. These were a third faction of Transformers, about the size of a Micromaster, but able to combine with the larger Transformers, boosting their power and activating extra gimmicks. As long time readers know I’m also annoyed that they didn’t use the fact that they can also act as mounted weapons, armor, and other tools in any meaningful way in any of the media I’ve looked at thus far. And with the exception of manga and the rest of the young reader books I’ve pretty much looked at all of it by now.

Of course Japan can’t seem to be bothered to keep the US names so for them Mini-Cons are actually called Microns, which if memory serves was actually a measure of time in previous Transformers cartoons. At least they did Car Robots first and was intended to be a Japan-exclusive series like Transformers Go!, but I like Mini-Con better than Microns. They’re mini robots that connect to larger robots and occasionally each other into slightly larger robots or super weapons. Works for me.

Each show had their own name and their own intros and I’ll get more into that as we go along. However, let me warn you at the outset that no matter what the lyrics for Legend Of The Microns are, the intro is still way better than we saw in Armada. We have two intros for each country…depending on how you look at what we’re getting from Armada. Allow me to demonstrate.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Simpsons Super Spectacular #14

Somehow when I did the original review, which I’ll just be copying over here, I managed to get the name wrong. I don’t know how I KEPT doing that since the comic should have been in front of me and it wasn’t my first issue with that title and I got it right in the file name for the cover scan. I don’t understand my own brain sometimes.

The Tony Awards are getting vicious.
