BW Filler Video: The Doctor Meets The Stranger (and other knockoffs)

When a show gets popular enough there’s always someone looking to make a cheap knockoff in hopes of fooling the public, and Doctor Who. This is a bit different from fan films like Professor What, which only exists out of a love of the series, or homages like Inspector Spacetime from Community (which I’ve only heard of as I don’t watch the show) or Doctor Zone from Milo Murphy’s Law (which I have both seen and promoted). These are just cheap cash grabbers going after a particular fandom.

From the YouTube channel Quinton Reviews here’s a look at one particular knockoff featuring an actual Doctor and a few Companions. Sort of. Let me introduce you to…The Stranger.

BW’s Morning Article Link: The Greatest Capes In Comics

My love of capes and my fight to preserve them, at least for superheroes for whom capes make sense–even I wouldn’t put the Flash or Iron Man in one, has been well chronicled on this site. Sorry, Edna Mode, but yes capes! I stumbled across this article from Hero Envy goes over what the writer feels is the 10 greatest capes in comics. It does start by going over why capes look good on the right superheroes, so that’s a bonus. Only one villain makes the list but it’s an obvious choice. Oddly Batman doesn’t make #1 but I can’t necessarily argue with the writer on his choice. He makes a good case for it.

The Race-Changing Of Superman?

Remember this? Because I think we’ve all tried to forget it.

The haters of Superman are at it again folks. It doesn’t stop. When you hate a character but want to steal that prestige because only the characters you like should be popular, you boil it down to the barest concept you can and claim the names for yourself. It’s a running complaint here at the Spotlight, and now an article by Ruben Baron on CBR, a site that used to be Comic Book Resources but decided it was too good for just comics, had decided to take concept over character and add it to their identity politics.

Look, I don’t like discussing politics but to me this is an example of concept over character and that’s something I will protest, even if someone wanted to turn something I hate into something I like for no good reason. Everyone is allowed to have their own storytelling preferences and to have those preferences met. By using the hivemind to try to subvert that in order to push your personal sociopolitical agenda (again, whether I agree with it or not is not the issue) is only the reason why, but for me and the purposes of this site it could just be wanting to take something with a famous name and slap it on your “better” idea. See also Battlestar Galactica. It’s also not a question of story quality. You can tell good stories whether you’re (mis)using a famous name or not, but why not create something new and turn potential detractors into potential fans?

So how is CBR targeting Superman? Since they only see the concept they want to make him black, for no other reason than representation. I have two videos on this subject to show you along with my own thoughts on the matter. The first (which I warn you is a bit more vulgar than you usually see around here) is from Just Some Guy, who for the record happens to be black himself and does such a good job refuting his statements that the only difference between doing a BW Versus article and just posting this is we have different ways of making the same point. One of CBR’s points of reason, that a black-skinned Kryptonian should “obviously” be able to absorb more of that precious yellow sunlight that gives Superman his powers, was examined in the past by Comics Drake, so I’ll be including that as well. I do have points of my own to make so you’re not getting out of reading tonight.

BW’s Morning Article Link: What Movie Did Raphael See?

In the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie Raphael goes out to see a movie to cool off after losing one of his sais while rescuing April from a mugging. The various adaptations didn’t all go see the same movie Raph did in the movie. Dinosaur Dracula goes over the other adaptations and the movies Raph went to in alternate universes.

Chapter By Chapter: Tom Clancy’s Op-Center chapters 47-49

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

I kind of want to just get to the review and put me out of my misery but every article is potentially someone’s first, so I should mention that thus far I have not enjoyed this book. When the focus is on the bombing investigation and the extremest group trying to go to war with each other it’s rather interesting. When it shifts to the title location only two characters are worth watching. The remainders are a bunch of jerks I can’t bring myself to root for beyond not wanting to see a second Korean War. That is not the story I want to read. So this week we have three chapters because the other problem with this book is the weird way it approaches chapters with their insistence on time stamps. Maybe it’s a Tom Clancy staple or something but I don’t care for it.

  • Chapter 47: Tuesday, 10:05 AM, Op-Center: four pages
  • Chapter 48: Wednesday, 1:10 AM, The Diamond Mountains, North Korea: two pages
  • Chapter 49: Wednesday, 1:15 AM, The DMZ: eight pages if you count half a page

Well, let’s get this over with.
