BW’s Morning Article Link: Robotech And Rainbow Brite Coleco Games?

Through The Retroist I learned about this completed Kickstarter and it looks like it was funded. It’s a Robotech and Rainbow Brite set of games done in those old Coleco handheld arcade style games. Only instead of a bunch of random lights indicating where Pac-Man is, a modern mini LCD screen gives you Game Boy Advance level sprites and gameplay. Did anyone out there back this, and did you actually get one? Were they any good or was it a scam?

Jake & Leon #398: Overarmored

It has a cape. You just can’t see it.

During that software organizing project I tested Batman: Arkham Asylum, which just made me wish more that I could find the right screen recorder for Vista that works with video games so I can start the Batman: Vengeance let’s play I’ve been wanting to do for years. I also noted that they put him in armor, which is the norm for Batman nowadays and I still don’t like it. It just doesn’t fit with Batman’s proper fighting style and stealth abilities. I guess that’s the problem when everything has to be epic and huge. Also Bruce Wayne can be clean-shaven and they still draw Batman these days with a five o’clock shadow. That’s his real superpower.

Speaking of the software organizing I have an update in this week’s Clutter Report. I’ll have a different project for next week as I’m helping my dad with the dishes, but I’ll return to my project after that.

Tomorrow is also the last of the DC Universe titles in my collection I have yet to review. I still have plenty of the alternate universe like the DC Animated Universe, which will take over the Monday slot next week, and a few in my comiXology library that will be reviewed in the Saturday slot, and you never know when more will come into my collection. I want to beef up my Bronze Age titles. Otherwise everything continues as normal. The video review script is in completed first draft stage and I’ll try to edit that this week so I can start recording. It should be up in a few weeks if I’m lucky, so stay tuned for that and enjoy what else is coming this week.

As a warning: I’m seldom lucky.

Saturday Night Showcase: Ultraman Leo

It’s been too long since we did anything Ultraman-related here at the Spotlight, so Shout Factory decided to fix that. Ultraman Leo is the seventh Ultra Series show, following after Ultraman Taro. Leo is not from the usual Ultra worlds of Nebula M78 but planet L77 the Leo constellation. I’m not sure what qualifies as being an Ultra Being but that means he’s not one of the Ultra Brothers. He’s the last survivor of his home planet, destroyed by an alien menace that’s set its sites on Earth, naturally starting with Japan because where else do you attack with giant monsters except around the Pacific Ocean. Why do you think the Power Rangers all seem to be around California, even it looks like New Zealand?

In this first episode we also see Ultraseven in action. This one you might have seen on TV in that subpar dub from Ted Turner’s company. However, while he will be part of this series, this first episode is called “Death Of Seven!” so it won’t be much of a part. Can Leo avenge Seven? Since this is part one of a two-parter it’s going to be a bit longer to find out. I should warn you that Shout Factory’s subtitles in this video are a bit glitchy.

YouTube’s Celebrity Invasion

Oh, we’re talking YouTube again. Okay.

YouTube’s slogan is or was (I don’t know if they still use it) “broadcast yourself”. It was a platform for ordinary people to post cute or fun videos of themselves doing stuff or commenting on certain issues or events. While there were and are people who would post TV shows and movies they didn’t have the rights to, YouTube was about creator-made content, without the big studios and big name celebrities. In time, as video editing software and special effects software as well as updated video cameras, microphone set-ups, capture devices for video games, and other equipment and software once reserved for big and small studios became fiscally accessible to everyone else, YouTube, along with sites like Blip, Dailymotion, Vimeo, and just hosting stuff yourself somewhere brought a new kind of celebrity, one that didn’t need a Hollywood sized budget to drive its success, and created new forms of entertainment that couldn’t exist honestly or properly in mainstream media.

However, mainstream media took notice and not just because of those unapproved uploads I mentioned. In fact some distributors have worked deals to air smaller content that wouldn’t be picked up by TV, and even a few that are but on smaller channels, on YouTube. Maker Studios dismantled and destroyed Blip so it would get picked up by Disney, as more and more Hollywood studios see the potential of streaming but don’t like to share money and want as much of it as possible. Before that they would post trailers and previews for upcoming movies and TV shows. But the YouTube celebrity were still mostly people who wouldn’t make it in the hard to break through Hollywood circles and formed their own identity, some of them even making that break into larger media with their own shows on major and extended television channels or even the music industry. That didn’t change what a YouTube celebrity is.

In the last few years this has changed, as rich celebrities who can afford editors and high-end equipment have started making their own presence on the platform, which threatens to overshadow the “broadcast yourself” nature that YouTube was founded on. YouTube creator Ryder, also known by the screenname Footofaferret and host of A Brief History, goes into better detail than I can why the YouTube community isn’t happy with this invasion of the bigger celebrities and their impact on smaller ones and the direction Google might take YouTube.
