Star Trek: The Next Story Bible–Weapons Of Peace

Despite the fact that the 24th Century Starfleet was supposed to be lacking in military influence, the Enterprise did come with weapons both for the ship (or ships if you count the shuttlecrafts) and the crew. The next section of the writer’s guide goes into those weapons. It’s technically part of the “terminology” and there will be technobabble involved but how many more parts of that do you need? Plus the guide treats this as a separate section, thus so will I.

This and next week’s look at the computer are going to be short. They’re one page a piece in the guide. There are three reasons why, and admittedly one of them is to pad out this series to go through the rest of December, not counting Christmas week stuff. The second is I’m expecting to have quite a bit to talk about while the third is that the guide decided to categorize them this way for a reason so I shall too. Therefore, let’s take a short look at the phasers and photon torpedoes of legend. If you never knew what exactly they were and how they work, we shall see if we get our answers tonight.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Baby, It’s An Intervention Outside

Mr. Freeze’s character model shown in the show bible for Batman: The Animated Series.

I still maintain that “Baby It’s Cold Outside” isn’t a Christmas song because it isn’t about Christmas and didn’t even come from a Christmas movie. (Although as I mentioned in a Sing Me A Song posting–BONUS LINK–it didn’t even come from a movie period.) However, the current attacks on the song for being “rapey” is overblown. While the militant feminist movement seems to be considered the ones responsible for leading the charge, a Variety editorial suggests that the song about a woman trying to find a way to get around 1940s societal norms may actually be very feminist. I don’t know about that but I think it’s a lot more harmless than the critics make it out to be.

Internet Spotlight: New Official YouTube Popeye Cartoons

Yesterday’s Woody Woodpecker remake I was prepared for. One for Popeye and friends I was not. Like Universal, King Features has opted to create an official YouTube channel for old Popeye cartoons, not only the old theatrical shorts but the two cartoon shows created for CBS co-produced with Hanna-Barbera. And like the woodpecker, the sailor man gets a brand new cartoon series to go along with it.

I’m hoping this is a positive trend, of free-with-ads YouTube or even other sites bringing old properties back for the niche market that might still enjoy them. However, while Woody’s new shorts are quite good, and Mickey Mouse’s…let’s say varies by taste…the new Popeye shorts are not looking to be coming out the same. As of this writing, only the first of Popeye’s Island Adventures is out and let’s just say the cartoon could use a can of spinach.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Warner’s Otter Altering The Webseries Landscape

You don’t know how hard it was to come up with a decent title for this one. WarnerMedia has been working their way through the internet. In addition to being bought by AT&T (who around here sold their local U-Verse service to Frontier) Time Warner had taken in Rooster Teeth and Machinima while also taking in Otter Media. Now the recently formed WarnerMedia is planning to absorb all their digital networks (including Fullscreen and probably others I’m not remembering) into Otter Media. This also means they’ll be laying off 10% of their digital workforce. How this consolidation will affect these brands we have yet to see.
