I still maintain that “Baby It’s Cold Outside” isn’t a Christmas song because it isn’t about Christmas and didn’t even come from a Christmas movie. (Although as I mentioned in a Sing Me A Song posting–BONUS LINK–it didn’t even come from a movie period.) However, the current attacks on the song for being “rapey” is overblown. While the militant feminist movement seems to be considered the ones responsible for leading the charge, a Variety editorial suggests that the song about a woman trying to find a way to get around 1940s societal norms may actually be very feminist. I don’t know about that but I think it’s a lot more harmless than the critics make it out to be.
