DC’s Continued Body Count

You know, some of us saw this coming. I wasn’t ready to embrace Rebirth not because I thought it was a bad idea. It was something long needed in the DC Universe, but knowing the same people were still running the DC Universe I knew it wasn’t going to last.

Sometimes I hate being right. It happens so seldom and when it does it’s about things I want to be wrong on.

Heroes In Crisis is the latest example of a return to the New 52 style of DC storytelling. Actually, we should call it the “Crisis” style because the darkening of the DC Universe has been going on since Identity Crisis, a story that could have been interesting if it didn’t screw up so very much. And in this latest crisis more dead have been added. Most notably Roy Harper and the original Wally West. Meanwhile, Nightwing was shot and is near death. And all of this is fine with Dan DiDio. Killing Flashes, hating the Titans (odd, considering the kickoff show for DC’s new streaming service), and wanting Nightwing dead is nothing new for the DC Comics publisher. In case you missed this morning’s article link Professor Geek has the latest on this event, but this isn’t a filler video. I have my own thoughts on the continued mistreatment of my favorite comic universe.

BW’s Morning Article Link: The Dead In The Latest Crisis

Did you really think DC was done with their darker style and body count? Of course not. It’s all the current people in charge know how to do, or all they’re interested in doing. Fansided’s Bam Smack Pow has a report on the deaths we do know of in Heroes In Crisis and why death no longer matters. I’ll be getting more into this latest misstep by DC later tonight.

Chapter By Chapter: The Death And Life Of Superman ch. 27

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

We’re getting close to the end now. Superman is back and despite not yet being at full strength he’s joining Steel, Superboy, and Supergirl in crashing the Cyborg and Mongul’s party. However, what’s going to happen to the Eradicator? Will he join in or die right there in the Fortress Of Solitude? Let’s find out.

The further I go in a book the harder it is to come up with a full intro.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Telltale’s Walking Dead Game Continues Without Telltale

I don’t have a lot in the way of zombie imagery in my media library. Not surprising if you know me.

Although Telltale Games shut down in a move that’s drawn a lot of controversy (I’m with the developers on this one), Robert Kirkman wants to complete the episodic video game story they were working on for their tie-in to The Walking Dead. Skybound will therefore complete the final game in the series themselves, finishing the tale of Clementine (I don’t know who she is but I’m guessing that’s a good thing). That’s dedication to your creation and to a story I hear people like. (I’m not into zombie stuff.) DC isn’t even doing that with the Batman game. Good on you, Kirkman. Wherever else we disagree that’s a good creative move.

Jake & Leon #379: Titans Stopped

When have the heroes NOT been in crisis since DiDio took over?

I’ll go over this more later this week but DiDio does have a problems with the Titans, although oddly it’s the same time DC’s streaming service is unleashing a show about the Titans, but they didn’t kill one from the show. Although they do have Nightwing nearly dead, and DiDio has wanted to kill him off before. He also does seem to want to bring back the style of the New 52/DC You that fans rejected. I don’t think he understands why they did Rebirth. Then there’s Tom King’s treatment of Batman as well as writing the Heroes In Crisis comic where the body count of heroes continues, but like I said, I’ll get into it later this week. I’ll also look at the Titans show chasing potential fans off with it’s darker tone and the full trailer for She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power is out so we have a better idea what to expect. We’re also nearing the end of The Death & Life Of Superman (insert Brian Michael Bendis joke here) and getting to deeper character profiles from the season one writer’s bible for Star Trek: The Next Generation. Full week if I can pull it off.

Meanwhile, the Clutter Reports had my recent review of Batman Chronicles: The Gauntlet so I could finish setting up the laptop to resume digital comics and get this comic out. I’m just linking to the BW review because there are no changes anyway.

In comics we’re back to the Marvel US reprints of the Fourth Doctor UK comics and getting out of the War Of The Believers arc of Robotech: Return To Macross to see what’s happening in Academy Blues. I may have to place it elsewhere in my collection for continuity’s sake when I’m done. So let’s see how much of my agenda I manage to pull off.
