Robotech: Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles trade paperback

Prelude was a five issue miniseries that bridges the gap between the cliffhanger ending of Academy Comics‘ Robotech II: The Sentinels comic, still my favorite Robotech comic series, and the recent animated movie The Shadow Chronicles, both exploring the minor cliffhanger at the end of the original series, the fate of Admiral Rick Hunter and the Robotech Expeditionary Force. I didn’t get the individual issues because I didn’t find out about it until they were a few issues into their run, and had to wait for the trade. This is odd for me, since as BW readers know I prefer the serialized format. So was it worth the wait?
It’s a Robotech comics with the Waltrips at the helm. Slag yeah it was!
The series begins at the ending of Sentinels, with Minmei taken prisoner by T.R. Edwards just as he’s about to escape, and Lynn Kyle dead. What follows I’m pretty sure wasn’t what the Waltrips had previously intended (I’d have to recheck the Sentinels timeline special) but it reminds me why I miss them on the series. The story is excellent, although the Sentinel aliens do little more than cameo, even during the final battle.
The artwork is spectacular, and matches the style of the animated series and movie. Omar Dugan does the art on the first 3 and a half issues, with the Waltrips helping on the final issues. Miguel Troncoso takes color for those issues and is also good.
Overall, I highly recommend this series for any Robotech fan, especially if you enjoyed the Waltrips’ past works or the movie.
