Iron Man Vol. 2 #10
Marvel Comics (August, 1997)
“Dead Man Walking” WRITER: Jeph Loeb PENCILER: Terry Shoemaker INKERS: JD & Norm Rapund COLORIST: Martin Jimenez COMPUTER COLORS: Wildstorm FX LETTERER: Albert Deschesne ASSISTANT EDITOR: Michelle Upchurch EDITOR: Ruben DiazAfter what I’m hoping is an unnecessary bit with Terax, we get to Iron Man and Rebel attacking Hydra HQ, who even have Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo on their side. Mandarin decides to wipe out Madame Hydra for reasons, and Tony nearly sacrifices himself to stop Mandarin…who in the Reborn universe turns out to be a robot under the command…of Victor Von Doom!
What they got right: Well, it’s a twist we didn’t see coming. The Mandarin is Iron Man’s #1 enemy in the regular Marvel universe so seeing him this way is a surprise.
What they got wrong: It’s also really stupid because he’s Iron Man’s #1 foe in every other universe by this point. It reduces a good villain to “plot twist” to make Doom, what, the only villain in the Reborn universe? Was he behind any other threat the Reborn heroes faced? Is he behind Sitwell, too? Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, Samson is now Reborn Abomination and they were go to try some transfusion with Bruce to fix that but Bruce hulked out and Jennifer did the transfusion in his place and does anybody really care about this subplot? Anyone?
Recommendation: Heroes Reborn continues to earn its reputation as a bad idea. Just keep walking past these comics.
