Transformers: Megatron Origin #3

IDW Publishing (August, 2007)

WRITER: Eric Holmes

ARTIST: Alex Milne

COLORIST: Josh Perez (assisted by Mark Bristow)

LETTERER: Neil Uyetake

EDITOR: Chris Ryall

Megatron, damaged in another fight, is introduced to three flight-capable warriors–Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp. He allows them to join and sends them to kidnap Senator Decimus. Later that night in the arena Megatron attempts to recruit the warriors seeking fuel or death to instead join an army…only for the “festivities” to be broken by Sentinel Prime and his team, who take the warriors prisoner. At the prison someone gets Soundwave release, while Starscream offers to discuss their full plans, which Megatron doesn’t seem happy about.

What they got right: I admittedly like this part of the origin. Megatron gathering the most ruthless and desperate to become his Decepticons makes a lot of sense to me, more than “humble miner accidentally kills and starts a revolution” does for Megatron’s backstory. And whether Starscream is betraying Megatron or enacting part of Megatron’s plan has yet to be seen but Starscream is believable either way.

What they got wrong: I’m not surprised to see Grimlock here but Sunstreaker being among the crowd makes me unhappy. I haven’t been fond of IDW’s take on his character either and he’s about to get worse from here. I haven’t decided if it’s worse that Prowl, but at least Furman has a long history of ruining Prowl and IDW just followed him on that.

Recommendation: Forget the other issues. I say start right here because this is when it starts feeling like a proper origin for Megatron, although you could make the case for the last half of issue #2 considering Soundwave’s debut.
