Friday Night Fights: The Phantom Fights All Kinds Of Monsters

After doing so poorly previously I actually won the first two rounds! How long will that streak continue? Let’s find out tonight. Or Tuesday since that’s when the results are posted after Sunday wraps up the voting time.

The last survivor of a pirate attack, young Walker swore an oath to fight evil, a tradition handed down from father to son. In their time, the Walker line have collectively seen all kinds of evil and terrors that would make most men shiver with fright. Should it be a surprise then that making the Phantom see the usual monster is not going to have a lot of effect?

So what happens when the Phantom gets his own version of Batman’s Scarecrow? Just another day in the jungle for the Ghost Who Walks.

BW’s Morning Article Link: My Pet Monster Was Everywhere

This is more my kind of cuddly monster.

My Pet Monster was a plush monster with breakway handcuffs which retains a cult following. It had it’s own cartoon series and a direct-to-video live-action movie. It also gets used in a lot of sets. Matt of Dinosaur Dracula happens to love the criminal fuzzball and with some help managed to find a bunch of movies in which My Pet Monster was hanging out in some kid’s fictional bedroom.

Commercials That Need To DIE: Parentomorphesis

Geicko’s marketing firm is rather amazing. Think fast! Name a Geicko ad campaign that was terrible. Most of you had to think about it, because they come up with some hits. Progressive hasn’t been so lucky. The living box somehow stayed on even after the big hit, the Flo campaign (and now Flo and Jamie), stopped using boxes to demonstrate bundle packages. Meanwhile, the aforementioned Flo and Jamie has evolved a number of sub-campaigns and watching their antics is usually amusing. I also like the “The Turns We Take”, the fake soap opera that changes their endings so you look to see what Susan Lucci is up to now.

However, unless it involves Flo the campaigns are rather weak and I doubt you remember any of them that don’t involve Flo, Jamie, or the rival insurance guys. Maybe if it was really bad. Well there’s one campaign that’s slowly getting on my nerves because of how uninteresting, stupid (and not in the funny way), and bland as the “Mommeostasis/Daddeostatsis” ads. And just when I thought it was gone they added a wrinkle to this. You’ve probable seen these ads if you live in the US. You know, the people slowly turning into their opposite gender parents? Was this ever funny to anyone?

BW’s Morning Article Link: Writing Other Cultures

Yamaha Zuma/BW's

I wasn’t given any photos to work with this topic, so here’s a motorcycle. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Is it possible to write a story involving in some way a culture not your own? There are people out there who say “no”, especially if the writer is a white man. However, author James Harrington questions whether this is “cultural appropriation” and how you write another culture correctly.

10 Minutes Of Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts

The DC Kids YouTube channel (because despite a limited offering for kids or even kid-friendly they will push their kids shows) has posted the first 10 minutes of the direct-to-video movie Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts. This was the first in the Batman Unlimited movies (based on the toyline), which was followed up by a series of shorts on the same YouTube channel. The story follows Batman’s animal-themed villains (although oddly not Catwoman, instead they bring in Wonder Woman foe Cheetah) teaming up to cause chaos. The first ten minutes (which includes the intro so it’s closer to eight or nine minutes) features Batman, Alfred, Nightwing, Cheetah, Flash, and Killer Croc, while Penguin and Green Arrow are also featured in the movie. Let’s see what we’re in for with this movie.
