BW’s Morning Article Link: A Live-Action Dora Movie?

Apparently the live-action status symbol continues to demand all cartoons be turned into live-action movies regardless of whether or not it makes sense. Next on the cartoon-trashing campaign is Dora The Explorer, or rather the spin-off series Dora And Friends: Into The City, which features a teenage Dora moving to the city and making new friends. Early reports also include moving Dora’s cousin Diego from his spin-off show, Go Diego Go, and out of the jungle since the early plots state that Dora is moving with him to the city. No word about Boots or if any of their forest or city friends from the other shows will make an appearance.

Of course the big complaints are that Michael Bay’s name is coming up, but according to the linked-to article it was just announced that it’s his production company and that Bay himself isn’t tied to the project. Still, I’m betting they sneak their brand of technology into it–although I doubt Nickelodeon is going to let THAT show get a sexy makeover no matter how much or little participation Bay has. Maybe Swiper will explode at some point? I just hope the kids who actually play the characters in the shows get at least a cameo if they don’t match up to their cartoon counterparts.

Also, this is going to be the last Morning Article Link until December, since tomorrow is November and the beginning of this year’s Art Soundoff Challenge, which I’ll be taking part in. Hope you don’t mind my face and voice five days a week for the next month.

Chapter By Chapter: Fantastic Voyage novelization ch. 1

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Note that there will be spoilers for the movie as well, not only to denote any changes I notice but because we’re reviewing the novelization of the movie of course things will be revealed from the movie. It’s time to read our first chapter, and unlike last time this should only take this one article. What a novel idea…no pun intended.

I will say that the back of the book spells out every danger (minus the villain) that our heroes are going to be dealing with. The chapters are of a decent length, maybe around 12 pages per chapter, so there should be quite a bit to discuss. If you guys have this novel, feel free to comment, but as the intro says, don’t ruin anything for later chapters. I’ve finally seen the movie but I haven’t read the book. And now I have the Henry’s Cat theme song in my head. So let’s get on with this.

Chapter 1: Plane

BW’s Morning Article Link: Can’t I Call Them European Comics?

It’s bad enough that I can’t refer to manga as “comics from Japan” without risking a verbal assault, now the European comics have to have a snobby name to them: bandes dessinees, which roughly translates to…COMICS! Just as “manga” is “motionless pictures” or….COMICS! Stop being afraid of the word “comics” and maybe some people will give them more of a chance, In this case ICv2 contributor Steve Bennett talks about getting people to try comics from the European continent. Maybe if you just said “comics from France” or “comics from Belgium” people might be more curious. People do like comics, you know!

Although I did learn why the 90s cartoon Heroes On Hot Wheels made a big deal about Michael Valiant, their lead character. So that was interesting. And now I’d like to read this French comic.

Jake & Leon #339: Jon & Damien’s Halloween part 2

And who says Halloween costumes have to be scary? Mine weren’t.

Sometimes you just come up with another gag. I’m still getting used to the tablet, but I’m getting better.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week I resumed going through old newsletters and other papers.

So apparently I miscounted how many issues are left to the Devil’s Due take on Voltron. We’ll be finishing the regular series next week. This week, starting Wednesday, the Morning Article Link will be on hiatus so I can take part in the Art Soundoff Challenge throughout the month of November. I’ll still be adding my takes from the review as well as budding creative side, but now we have the tablet to discuss and some of the extra prompts added by Jerzy and Rob. This should be an interesting month. And tomorrow we begin reading a brand new book that should only need one article a week, so I can discuss other things. I hope I remember how to do that. Have a good week and a safe Halloween!

Saturday Night Showcase: Preparing For Art Soundoff 2017

For the past two years I’ve taken part in the Art Soundoff Challenge, a collaborative event created by Jerzy Drozd and Rob Stenzinger of the Lean Into Artcast, and founders of the comic teaching website Lean Into Art. Taking place every November, participants audio and v-log about their art day, things they’ve been thinking about with their various art and comic projects, and even respond to commentaries by other Art Soundoff participants. It’s always interesting to see what other creators are saying about comic creation and what I can learn or what I already know. And this year, in addition to usually being the only critic among my fellow creatives (which is my unique perspective–we all have one) I’ve just starting using a graphics tablet, which means learning more Clip Studio Paint features I didn’t use when I just colored and lettered comics and title cards with it (when I didn’t use Paint Shop Photo Pro for some projects that is).

Additionally, Jerzy and Rob have added a few features to the project. In tonight’s showcase (which I would have posted last week but I had a good lead-in to Star Wars: Forces Of Destiny and I wanted to use it) I bring you the announcement for this year’s Art Soundoff Challenge, just in case any of you new people are story and art creators and might want to join in.
