I’ve been looking for an opening to post this, hopefully before it happens. Rifftrax is doing another live riffing that will be shown live in theaters as well as the live venue that is nowhere near me. The next riffing will be the classic Doctor Who episode “The Five Doctors“, which teamed up all the existing Doctors and Companions (although the First had to be replaced with a new actor and Tom Baker didn’t want to take part and used some unaired footage to sneak the Fourth in there).

Annoyed that the previous US Godzilla movie for what appears to be an American Kaijuverse was lacking in monster fights? Or rather they had fights but we weren’t allowed to see them. The latest update on Godzilla 2 shows the four announced monsters (including the Big G of course) are on a call sheet for the same day. Hopefully the new director will let us see them fight. We barely got to see Godzilla fighting the MUTOs in the first movie.

When we last left our discussion, we looked at some of Wertham’s thoughts going into the various tests to determine what part comics played in kids doing bad things, as if no kid ever committed evil acts before. While I agree that kids can be influenced the question comes up as to whether or not comics had the power Wertham gave them and are there ways to minimize the damage without censoring an industry. (Based on history certain parties thought not.) Tonight I want to focus on the various tests Wertham went over, noting last time that a simple questionnaire failed to properly explore a child’s thought processes. But no matter how much work you put into a story, when you want particular results, you’ll find them however you can. And unless this goes into a third part we’ll also meet the Hookey Club, and see how that was a good idea, but leads to a few more questions on my part. Context has been one of my demands here.

Chapter By Chapter: Seduction Of The Innocent ch. 3 part 3
Okay, let’s see if we can finish this one tonight because this isn’t BW Wertham Spotlight. Here’s the chapter we’re reading this week, kids, if you need a reminder.
We only have two more things to cover, but one is full of story stuff, which is my wheelhouse, and the other is about kids, which is a huge concern of mine. As we left off we were about to get to one more test, the Duess test. And then finally we’ll meet the Hookey Club, a group of truants who get together and discuss stuff, presumably aided by the therapist. Or perhaps nudged a bit in a certain direction. Let’s see more about how Wertham came to the conclusions we’ll be seeing throughout the book.
