Wait, aren’t Colossus and Kitty supposed to be closer in age? They almost got married once. The whole line of dialog is paranoia and seems to just build on their hatred of comedy unless it’s being quirky with no real reason behind it. Granted, this isn’t so much a “joke” as something dumb said in anger or annoyance about somebody they don’t know, but that’s not how Piotr is framing this, is it?
Yes, I did do a “many intros” earlier this month and I have an even bigger “many, many intros” planned for October. However, reading the nostalgialess DC take on Space Ghost from the early 2000s made me nostalgic for the real thing. Instead of just talking about that though I felt inclined to go over the anthology series that introduced me to Space Ghost and many more Hanna-Barbera superheroes, so I’m taking this week to go over Hanna-Barbera’s World Of Super Adventure through the intros of the show.
Now, put yourself into the mind (not literally for any of you mad scientists and dark wizards in the audience, please) of a lonely five-year-old sitting in front of his television in 1979 AD when this hits the screen.
You don’t know who this “Hanna Barbera” guy is but you know awesome when you see it! This along with the stuff I was seeing on Saturday mornings and other shows in syndicated reruns before first-run syndication was a concept was my introduction to superheroes. Then I learn about comic books and I was never the same. Here you have an epic narration telling you that these heroes have amazing powers and use them to battle evil and right wrongs. Yeah, you have more than just my attention. And then the shows started. Some of my favorites included…

The new Quantum Leap is so far intended to be a sequel series in which a new team tries to learn why Sam Beckett never leaped home, as stated in the final episode (then maybe they shouldn’t have given him a wife in that one episode?). Questions have been raised by fans as to why Scott Bakula isn’t returning to the show. Well, he just took to Instagram to answer that question. Dean Stockwell, who played his helper, Al, passed away last year so he can’t return either (not that’s not mentioned as part of the reason why Bakula isn’t returning).
Last time we actually did only read one chapter. Meanwhile, Jake finally got a job and learned why he was unfrozen. So at least he has that going for him.
It’s strange. Usually I don’t run out of things to talk about this early in the book but honestly we don’t know a lot. So far the book has been more interested in worldbuilding than character introduction. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy worldbuilding as much as the next creative but maybe they should have spent less time showing how futuristic this world is and gave us more with the characters. I really don’t have a lot to speculate on as we go into tonight’s chapter, so I guess we’ll just hop right in and see how things go now that Jake is a bit closer to solving his mysteries. Not his problems, because we’re barely a quarter through the book, but answering some of his questions about why he’s out early.
