Chapter By Chapter> TekWar chapter 5

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at a time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

In the previous chapter we got Jake out of the cryogenic prison. While we learn a bit about Jake’s history and personality so much of the focus thus far has been on worldbuilding and how in the future we are in this story. That and some pacing issues I’m starting to notice concerns me. For now I’m just doing the one chapter thing but at some point I can see doing multiple chapters just to move the story forward so hopefully this won’t be an issue for long. I’m very pro-worldbuilding but not at the expense of the actual narrative I’m here to read.

Usually it’s near the end of the book that I run out of topics but so far this book has given me so little I don’t even have a starter to keep these intros at a decent length for the homepage. So let’s get into chapter 5 and see what happens when Jake gets home.

BW’s Daily Article Link> A Girl Learns To Play Boys Games

Demographics are bull#@#$%. Just because a game or other type of…anything…was created with one group in mind doesn’t mean that someone outside that age, gender, or other made up statistic group can’t enjoy it as well without it being re-engineered with that other group in mind and it’s not creepy if it happens. (I’m looking at those of you who look down on college boys enjoying My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, but feel free to call them out when they try to adultify it. I do.) Jessica Howard, writing for Gamespot, discusses how she found herself enjoying Mass Effect, and how it led her to play other games not made for girls and still loving them.

Jake & Leon #537> Artist Emergency

If you’re any kind of artist and haven’t had this happen…it will.

This happened to me and kept me from making Captain PSA by Friday. It should come out this week. I hope. More updates in a moment.

First I have to tell you what’s going on at The Clutter Reports this week. The back-up drive reorganizing continues and as it turns out this is has been a bit of self-education when it comes to organizing not only computer files but physical clutter as well. That’s fitting since I started using tricks organizing paperwork and comics to do this one. It all comes full circle.

So what else is coming this week? The latest chapter of TekWar on this week’s Chapter By Chapter for one. For Robotech Monday in the “Yesterday’s” Comic” reviews we get to I believe the last series of the Academy Comics run I have to review unless there’s an issue or two in the remainder group of attempts at post-war Earth. Also, and feel free to yell at me if I don’t do this and there are no extra circumstances preventing me, I have a plan that I hope would make the Snyder fans happy as well as DC fans…depending of course on what said fans of both groups are really asking for. I’ll explain then. As far as what the other feature articles will be, we’ll find out together.

Have a good week, everyone!

Saturday Night Showcase> Ultraman Taro

Yes, I know, ANOTHER Ultraman show, but as of this writing it is the last one in my backlog (though I haven’t started going through the Watch Later given my current YouTube backlog). This time we’re going back to the sixth Ultra show, which the intro will happily remind us, with Ultraman Taro.

Kotaro Higashi has travelled the world to become a boxer. He’s a man that if this pilot is to be believed may have more guts than sense. It doesn’t help that the flower he tries to plant turns into a monster that eats other monsters. When he gets himself fatally injured he’s brought to the Land Of Light to merge with Ultraman Taro, son of the Father and Mother of Ultra, and goes back to save the world alongside anti-monster group #6, the Zariba of All Territory, or “ZAT”. (An acronym that needs a translation.)

Bigger Ultra fans than myself can correct me but this series seems to actually bring us more Ultra lore as we learn about the royalty of the planet. Having only seen episode 1 myself (that backlog I mentioned plus a DVR full of stuff) I don’t know how much of it, but this is the first I’ve seen about the home and living of the Ultras. Enjoy.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Chakra The Invincible FCBD (digital edition)

“This actually hurts my hands.”

FCBD: Stan Lee’s Chakra The Invincible Special 2015

I’m calling this the digital edition because while I don’t know where my copy of the Free Comic Book Day hardcopy is, if I even have one, I’m using the comiXology version, which doesn’t have the same cover (no mention in the comiXology/Kindle cover about being based on a show streamed through Angry Birds ToonsTV, which streamed through the Angry Birds game apps) and I don’t know what else is different. Apparently the movies aired on Cartoon Network at some point.

In what I swear wasn’t an inspiration for Herodude’s origin, Raju Rai is a boy living in Mumbai with dreams of being a scientist. He finds a suit that is powered by the wearer’s own chakras (natural energy, it’s from Hindu beliefs) but gets hit by lighting while protecting it from bad guys, giving him superpowers. This is the one page origin followed by our adventures with Raju as Chakra The Invincible. (Hey, he’s a kid.)

“Chakra Meets The Giantess” finds Raju dealing with an adult bully who learns that “there’s always someone bigger than you” when a giant woman starts rampaging through the city. Chakra tries to nicely talk her into leaving before she destroys everything but when that doesn’t work he uses his smarts to defeat her. Able to change her size thanks to a formula she escapes and tells her boss that the stuff works. It’s a good story. The message that bigger isn’t always better and that “there’s always someone bigger than you” is a good one. Instead of going right to the punching Chakra uses his head to take the giantess down. A good first story.

“Chakra Meets Akram Pakram” (is this going to be the title method of the whole series? I haven’t seen the cartoons this is based on) has our hero going up against a pickpocketing yogi, who uses his flexibility to commit robberies. This one actually shows us Raju transforming into Chakra and has a bit more of Indian culture to it. Not that every story has to but if the goal is to introduce American kids to Hindu and Indian culture (and possibly be a superhero for kids whose ancestry IS India) it works quite well while the rest of us just get a good superhero story.

“Chakra Meets Thanda” (so we are doing this) has a crazed teacher upset for being fired since kids wouldn’t listen to her. Now gaining ice powers she’s trying to freeze Mumbai solid. This story we get to see Chakra use one of his unique powers besides flying as he uses “solar chakra” to defeat Thanda’s ice powers.

“Chakra Meets Shadow Runner” (sigh) is…confusing. For one thing the art style has changed. I’m guessing Trippe did this one on his own but I’ve seen his other work and this just doesn’t look the same. The story is confusing as well. Chakra takes a night patrol and runs into muggers, who are stopped by a hero named Shadow Runner, but he (possibly she, I couldn’t tell for sure from the body type and Shadow Runner is covered head to toe) want to take the money for himself, but Chakra just says “we should give this back” and he tosses it to Chakra and leaves….what just happened here?

“Chakra Meets Blobby” (no really, stop it!) is our last adventure and a different art style again, though closer to what we’ve seen earlier. Frankly I like the one used on the cover and first three stories. Again, I haven’t seen the show this is based on (back when the Angry Birds owners had their own mini-streaming service this was posted there) but I hope the art is closer to the others. Dr. Singh, the guy Raju works for and created the suit that led to him becoming Chakra, creates a blob creature who starts absorbing everything, including Raju’s birthday cake. This seems like a big mistake, Doc. It’s a fun little story that also gives us some insight into Chakra’s mentor.

Overall these were very fun stories. While the naming theme got silly after a while and you have to wonder what happens if he meets these characters again, the stories themselves are fun and interesting to see a superhero in India, much like watching Miraculous: Tales Of Ladybug And Cat Noir fighting villains in Paris. It’s something different and they use the idea rather well. I can’t speak to future issues or the show but this comic in particular is just fine.
