BW’s Daily Article Link: What Harry Potter Characters Should Look Like?

Photo by Melike Benli on Pexels.com

Hollywood seems to be having trouble matching adapted characters with actors when they have a picture of them handy, so imagine how much harder it is when they don’t? Someone put the descriptions of Harry Potter characters into an artificial intelligence art program to see if we can get an actual look at what the characters would look like versus the actors in the movie and Buzzfeed’s Alexa Lisitza put the images against their actors.

Jake & Leon #526: Our Next Contestant

The sad part is that there are areas of the world where these are legit jobs. Two of them in the US.

Depending on your point of view I’ve actually seen the second one on game shows, and the first is legal in one town in Nevada (oddly not Vegas I hear but some town just outside of it). I know, it’s an odd comic for just after Free Comic Book Day AND on Mother’s Day but it’s what I came up with.

I’ll do a full Free Comic Book Day report on Tuesday, since I do the book review on Monday. If you didn’t catch the live tweet reviews I was kind of disappointed. I didn’t get the Ninja Turtles or Disney comic and I think I should have gotten those when I had the chance instead of the two I did. A second comic store didn’t have a limit but they ran out by the time I got there. Still, as mentioned in this week’s Clutter Report, that first store may buy some of the comics I’m trying to get rid of or at least help me to get rid of them. So something good came out of it.

Meanwhile I did practice what I preached and at both stores I bought something. Most were older DC titles I wanted, but two were Robotech comics, one of which was also a DC comic. I’ll explain more about that when I’m done with the regular Robotech comics. The other one I picked up was from the Eternity run of Robotech II: The Sentinels, which I’ll review tomorrow. I also picked up an issue of Star Trek: The Next Generation that was tied to an issue I have so I picked that up as well. The DC books, holes I wanted filled in my collection, I’ll go over when I’m done with Scooby-Doo Team-Up, which I forgot to review yesterday but would anyone have cared during Free Comic Book Day? The live-tweet reviews were yesterday’s comic review. I also got to talk with a couple of artists at the first store, which I’ll go over in the FCBD wrap-up on Tuesday. No sense doing full reviews because they were all preview stories, only two of the comics I picked up even having a self-contained story.

So Happy Mother’s Day, and be good to your mother. Unless she’s a horrible person you’ll miss her when she’s gone. I know I do. Have a good week, everyone!

Saturday Night Showcase> Batman: The Audio Adventures

Hope your Free Comic Book Day went well. I’m sure your eyes have been busy so tonight let’s do a little something for your ears that we can tie to this event.

Audio dramas have managed to survive without radio, thanks to the internet though it did hold in with home audio. You know, cassettes and CD, the audio version of VHS and DVD. HBO Max, for whatever reason but I’m happy they did, decided to produce a series of audio dramas for their YouTube channelBatman: The Audio Adventures are a series of slightly campy but still serious tales of Gotham City and those who dwell in it. This first episode at least is a series of short adventures drawn together under the theme of “life and death in Gotham City”, featuring four adventures and a series of fun advertisements.

In our first story, Jack Ryder gets the opinion of citizens about word that Batman would be considered a special consultant to Gotham PD. The second has a kingpin meet his match before he even gets close to killing Batman. In the third we get a somewhat different take on Two-Face that builds off of his split personality and I kind of like actually. I don’t know if it would work elsewhere but it’s good here. The final tale shows the Joker’s hiring practices. Enjoy.

Tronix’s Free Comic Book Day 2022 Pull List

It’s that time again. Free Comic Book Day is making it’s post-pandemic (depending on who you ask) return and comic stores are getting their offerings together. Depending on the weather I would love an opportunity to get out of the house for something other than doctors and shopping, but whether (no pun intended) I go or not I won’t be recording anything. While my local comic store is going to have guests I just want to enjoy myself for once. If I change my mind I’ll have my smartphone in hand but otherwise no plans to do anything other than see comics and maybe pick a few up, after which I’ll do the usual Twitter live-reaction as I read through them and do reviews possibly during the week. We’ll see what happens depending on what, if anything I pick.

Going over the catalog for this year (for those of you reading well after the fact you may see a different catalog) I noticed a heavy emphasis on horror and darker comics. Sure, Archie is still in that somewhat realistic “this isn’t what Archie comics have looked like in the many decades before changing everything” style but other titles seem to be focusing more on darker themes. We have yet another Neverland without Peter Pan story, a bunch of Endless wanna-bes trying to restore their dark god, and stories like that. Meanwhile the kids comics are VERY kids comics, meaning that we still have this barrier between kids and adults because nobody seems to want to make all-ages comics. Marvel has three offerings while DC has zero. I guess Warner Brothers Discovery wasn’t told how big Free Comic Book Day is, and when you’re trying to get eyes on comics, if WBD even cares which I doubt, it’s kind of important. Not that either universe is really worth exploring anyway.

However I did find seven comics that look like I might want to check them out at least. Doctor Who seems to want to go all-in on the Timeless Child with the practical mascot of that retcon on the cover so I’ll pass, while Avatar has Korra as well as Aang and I’m not sure I’m interested. So what would I be looking to check out if I make it to Free Comic Book Day?

BW’s Daily Video: What If Free Comic Book Day Was Free For Comic Shops?

Catch more from Alterna Comics on YouTube

This is still the case today as of this writing, so please buy something when you go for Free Comic Book Day this Saturday. Merchandise, boards and bags for your comics, back issues, maybe check the racks to see if anything interest you…just try to make this profitable for comic stores, because they were already in trouble before the lockdowns.

Later tonight I’ll go over the previews for this year’s Free Comic Book Day and see what interests me.
