BW’s Daily Video: Why I’m Bored Of High School Spider-Man

The only new continuity with an adult Spider-Man lately is the PlayStation games and I don’t own a PlayStation, and Into The Spiderverse, which I still need to see but I saw some clip whose title suggests that Peter and MJ divorced or broke up or something so already I’m having a questionable view of what I’m in for lorewise when I finally do get to watch it. So all I’ve seen lately is teen Spideys since The Spectacular Spider-Man and I’m with Comic Drake. I’ve had enough of it lately too. Even new comics start him in high school and keeps him there and that last part is the big problem. What’s worse is that more modern heroes are treated as more seasoned than Peter. For example, while looking for Mary Jane videos for last night’s commentary on MJ I found video from the current Spider-Man cartoon in which Peter is a huge fan of Ms. Marvel, the current Kamala Khan version, and she appears to be a more senior hero (despite being at best a couple of years older than the current Peter in the show) as well as an Avenger. Spider-Man in the comics was an Avenger before she was able to walk at least and Kamala is supposed to be a huge fangirl. That along with her religion was a selling point of the new Ms. Marvel.

Iron Man is treated as Spidey’s surrogate father figure and mentor in the MCU yet in every other media previous Tony was older but the two had both been fighting supervillains roughly the same amount of time. They want Peter a teen but everyone else gets to be their proper age and experience. You can’t have it both ways because you lessen Spider-Man as a superhero. If you want to have Peter new to the web-slinging game, at least be consistent. At least his supporting cast, which he met in college, gets de-aged with him but that’s not always right either and they do other things to alter the characters, not just MJ. But yeah, I’d like to see adult Spidey back on a regular appearance in movies or TV shows.

Adapting Mary Jane Watson

Mary Jane Watson is a character whose tragedy is not from the villains in her no-longer-husband’s life, nor her own issues with her father but from the people responsible for writing her. No, I’m not going to get into a huge rant about the Spider-Writers or Joe “married people aren’t relatable to the everyman, and now come meet my wife” Quesada because that’s not what we’re talking about this time. No, it’s the movies and TV appearances of the redhead (an increasingly scorned image in movies and TV to the point that the Doctor stopped asking to be ginger) that’s up for debate.

Specifically, the video below by Implicitly Pretentious going over the two theatrical appearances of “MJ” highlights how Sam Rami and Jon Watts (funny how I don’t have to look up Sam Rami or Marc Webb because you’re always told their names when discussing their movies but nobody mentions Jon Watts on the MCU films as often) both approached their MJ compared to Mary Jane in the comics. However, I think he makes a mistake by not mentioning a couple of other appearances, so allow me to build on his take.

“Yesterday’s” Comic> Marvel Tales #1 (Spider-Ham story)

“Stop hanging out in the insert and help us!”

Marvel Tails #1

Featuring Peter Porker: The Spectacular Spider-Ham

Marvel Comics (November, 1983)

Since I’m reading the reprinted story in Spider-Man Family I don’t have the Goose Rider back-up feature. Which is okay with me because I rarely liked the back-up stories in Peter Porker: The Spectacular Spider-Ham so I doubt this would be any different.

BW’s Daily Video: That Time The TARDIS Landed On The Swinetrek

Friday 13th July 2018 – The O2 Arena, London England, posted to YouTube by gonzo007

Apparently this was part of an event called The Muppets Take The O2. In another sketch on Saturday it’s the Fifth Doctor that drops in. This one is in better quality video (though I had to go looking for that one, the above video popped up in recommendations) but outside of a title and Doctor change it’s the same script.

Chapter By Chapter> BattleTech: I Am Jade Falcon prologue/chapter 1

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Well, I’ve reviewed a couple issues of the Blackthorne comic, the few issues I have of the Dark Horse miniseries, the cartoon, and the gamebook based on the cartoon (that was for The Clutter Reports, my other site) so since I’ve only played the demo of one game this is the last of the media I have on the BattleTech franchise. It was through the show that I became interested in the stories of the franchise though not playing the game itself due to my having the wrong personality to take part in a game where I’m only one voice among many storytellers. (I think that’s why kids didn’t want to play any games involving playing a character with me. My storyteller instincts come up with a story and my brain was thinking of them more as actors in my story than fellow storytellers, which is not good for role-play.) I liked the show so that brought me to the game book (which I though was a guide to the show although I was aware of the game thanks to ads in my childhood comics, which I think I mentioned in the reveal).

Now we head for the prologue and first chapter of our seventeenth book in this review series. I think I enjoyed it when I first read it but we’ll see if that happens this time as well. What I’m hoping for going in is at least enough explanation of the story to benefit new readers who may be experiencing this universe for the first time. Yes, the show was popular and the game was created in the 1980s but that was a cartoon and a role-playing game, niche crowds compared to book readers. This also wasn’t Robert Thurston’s first BattleTech novel so he may forget every story is potentially someone’s first. The prologue and chapter one are a combined 12 pages, so this may be Tom Clancy’s Op Center all over again. The chapters also start in a similar fashion, with location and time instead of a proper chapter name. So let’s see how this goes before we’re done. Prepare for multiple chapter reviews, thus ruining the title of this article series again. Time to begin.
