BW’s Daily Article Link: The New Comic Distribution Conflict

Advance Comics was better to the smaller comic shops I tend to use.

I reference Advance Comics, the ordering catalog my comic store at the time was using, in the above comic when discussing DC’s decision to end their exclusivity deal with Diamond Comic Distributors, who releases the Previews catalog every month. That original decision killed Advance’s parent company, Capital City Distribution and as former CEO and current founder/CEO of comic and game news site ICv2 Milton Griep notes it’s an interestingly timed choice once you know more about what goes on behind the scenes and the timing involved. Like Leon said, it took them long enough to realize an exclusive distributor may not have been the best thing for them.

Chapter By Chapter> Doctor Who: The Time Travelers prologue

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Lucky for me the prologue is short because I don’t have a lot of time tonight. “Short” is relative to the rest of the book, where the smaller type could make for a longer chapter. We’ll see how it goes.

So what I’m expecting is the Doctor not being the savior of the universe but a cantankerous old man who by this point is at least willing to help but still tries to be uninvolved, like the other Time Lords. His problem was that he stole a TARDIS and left with his granddaughter because he wanted to explore time and space (plus we later learn he had to hide a Time Lord weapon and chose Earth for whatever reason, which is what the Doctor and Susan originally ended up near Coal Hill for). However, being the prologue I’m not really expecting the regular cast so much as a set-up for what they’re about to find, a teaser opening if you will. No images and no titles so we’ll just be jumping right into these chapters.

Jake & Leon #457: Herodude & Enemies #1

I think we all need something silly about now.

I’ve been wanting to actually have Jake and Max do a Herodude & Enemies story since I came up with this a whole lot of strips ago, but other discussion topics kept coming up. With the entertainment industry still under the death plague quarantine even as they start coming back to work It seemed like a good time. Goodness knows I’ve let other current events have too much of a foothold on this comic. So I hope you enjoy the bit.

Meanwhile over at The Clutter Reports I prepped the comics I want to get rid of to finally be listed over at the Clutter For Sale section of my site. Keep an eye on that. You may find a comic you’re interested in, or you could also check out the other items up for grabs. I try to be reasonable with best offers but I do find out what these things are actually worth. Remember, I want to clean this clutter out, but I’m also unemployed and need the money.

As for the rest of this week, the new Chapter By Chapter book starts this week with Doctor Who: The Time Travelers. The last physical Scooby-Doo comic I have yet to review will be reviewed, though I still have that huge digital library thanks to the Scoob! promotion. We’re also nearly caught up with all of my Marvel Universe comics so I’ll need something new for Tuesday very soon. I think I know what though. And the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine comic this week (don’t worry, the Enterprise-D will be popping up again soon) is actually written by Sarek himself. (I hope it works better than the time Apollo wrote a Battlestar Galactica comic, as seen in the “Liefeld’s Galactica” reviews.) I’m not sure what else is coming up in articles, but I’ll try to make the week interesting. Have a good week, folks!

Saturday Night Showcase: Super Comics Challenge

Longtime BW readers know the name Jerzy Drozd, co-host of the Lean Into Artcast and co-founder of the Art Soundoff Challenge podcast I take part in every November with other comic creators. (Mine is in v-log form.) It was Jerzy, along with Mark Rudolph and their podcast Art & Story, that restarted my creative energies after someone at the Transformers newsgroup I was part of linked to their interview with Transformers Animated art director Derrick J. Wyatt. This is why Jerzy is also referred to as the BW Virtual Mentor. Being friends with Jerzy is easy. Have a love of comics, a desire to create and promote the medium, and think the idea of Sgt. Slaughter riding Battlecat would be totally awesome. So we are friends. I’ve also reviewed a number of his comic productions and co-productions over the 11 years this site has existed.

Jerzy has started up a new project along with some fellow cartoonists, a cartooning game show called Super Comics Challenge as he and co-host Gerimi Burleigh challenge three creators to a series of challenges. In this pilot young creator Elisabeth, colorist Aaron Polk, and comic writer/artist Greg Schigiel are tasked with three different challenges (okay, I’ve used that word enough in this paragraph and I wasn’t even trying) for glory and fun. Enjoy!
