BW’s Morning Article Link: Too American To Write For Doctor Who?

At least that’s the claim by comic writer Joe Hill, who watched the show with his kids and wanted to write a story for it. Apparently even getting Neil Gaiman’s help wasn’t enough. Someone in the comments said it might be a cultural thing but I wonder if they’d at least let him write one of the comics, since he created a popular horror comic? Does the same rule apply to novels or Big Finish dramas? At least he’d have a chance to write for the Doctor he and his sons started watching together with.

Chapter By Chapter> Spider-Man: Carnage In New York chapter 5

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

In a previous chapter Aunt May stopped by to see Mary Jane because she had a problem. I’m hoping this book isn’t going to be loaded with subplots. I don’t know if MJ’s lack of income is going to factor in but we already have Carnage coming and this homeless dinner Jameson’s planning, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this comes together. You can do more with Aunt Man than have something wrong with her if you really want her in the plot. Apparently there are only three stages of classic May Parker: doting aunt, needing money, and near death. Four if you count her occasional romantic interludes. (She gets around for an old lady whose so close to death both Thanos and Deadpool get jealous.) Okay, let’s see what she’s dealing with this time.

“I had this strange dream you sold your marriage to the devil to save me from a bullet wound even magic surgeons couldn’t fix despite my saying I wanted to be with your Uncle Ben. That’s just silly, isn’t it?”

All of that was written before I even started to read the chapter. It lends a bit of authenticity to the intro if I don’t know what’s going to happen going in, like any of you reading the book for the first time while following along. However, after looking at it this would be clickbait to anyone on the homepage because what’s happening in the image is only the last two pages. Instead it’s about Carnage being brought to New York to be experimented on, which we all know is going to end poorly even without the foresight of being readers, and a history of the symbiotes. I feel the image doesn’t properly represent the chapter and this doesn’t feel right to me.

BW’s Morning Video: The End Of Dragon Ball Z Abridged

Here’s a link to the post they mentioned that goes into more detail.

Personally I was more interested in how they were going to handle the Great Sayaman and Videl romance than Majin Buu, but I do understand when a project is no longer enjoyable it’s time to move on. They have more stuff coming. They didn’t mention anything about the DBZA versions of characters on their gaming channel but I’m glad they can work on projects that will advance them as creators and we’ll always have everything up to the Cell saga for as long as the rights holders allow it. If you go through their archives to the behind-the-scenes videos Kaiser put out you’ll see how much effort it took to make the animation fit their scripts and writing a story takes a lot of time and effort. While we’d all like to see the whole of Dragon Ball Z get the Abridged treatment, they’d rather it was good and ultimately that’s what matters, especially given how little money they can make from the project. (The aforementined in-character let’s plays and carefully designed merchandise is pretty much it without licensing fees.) I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with next without the restrictions inherent in an Abridged series done right.

I also need to get caught up with Final Fantasy 7 Machinabridged.

Jake & Leon #443: Black Light

Remember, it is just a rumor. Or a trial balloon. Either way it’s a bad idea.

Seriously, I saw this rumor online and couldn’t figure out why. Leon is basically aping my comments, right down to not really following the CW’s take on the DC Universe. (I was considering watching their Crisis On Infinite Earths event but it involved destroying every live-action DC show prior to the CW version not counting what’s on DC Universe and decided I didn’t want to really see that.) That said, at least Blackest Night had a point in the larger DC Comics universe that it doesn’t have in the “Arrowverse” so I’m hoping they scrapped that idea. I also don’t think they have to adapt every storyline from DC Comics. Their version of Crisis at least brought Supergirl and Black Lightning into the regular continuity after the former moved in from CBS and the latter…why was Black Lightning segregated from the other two universe? Yes, I’m calling it segregation. It started on the same network, unlike Supergirl and didn’t have to be put “over there”. At least now he has super hero friends.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week I reviewed Skyfall, a Transformer released in the Official Transformers Collector’s Club. One more review and I’m done going over this box. With more to go. The comic posted late tonight because after the photo shoot I found out my tripod needed a bit of repair and had to take care of that.

Back here at the Spotlight this week it would be nice to do a Finally Watched this week. The 23rd century Star Trek comics end this week until Paramount’s Star Trek Unlimited. We get to the Academy Comics run of Robotech II: The Sentinels, so I have to hurry and get the video review of the only completed episodes done soon. What did you guys think of my preview for Art Of Storytelling? I’ll have the first proper examination this week, plus another chapter of Spider-Man: Carnage In New York. Have a good week everyone!

Saturday Night Showcase: Robotex

I’m not sure when the game of tops became used for combat play. Maybe it always was, but in the 80s they decided to get creative with the design. For example, Spinjas had tops that looked like little ninjas and samurai fighting to keep the gyroscope that creates gravity from falling into the hands of evil Spinjas. And you thought only Thundera had that problem. They were neat looking toys but the backstory was kind of silly. The top as a battle game really got popular more recently when Japan sent us Bayblade, in which the tops are all modable fake blades that you used in battle. The show is about as accurate as any Yu-Gi-Oh episode, which means very little of the actual game play exists in favor of fighting spirit and heart and all that stuff. Strategy and luck are for suckers after all.

So what happens when you combine Bayblade with Transformers? You get South Korea’s Robotex, a series of tops that turn into robots…by having them fold up into the top and back out to be robots. It’s like the ultimate shellformer, for my fellow Transformers toy collectors. The toys are released globally by a company called Play Future if you’re curious, but I don’t think tonight’s Showcase is going to be all that convincing to be honest. A series was produced for South Korea’s KBS, and they posted one episode in English on one of their YouTube channels. It’s also the only English episode I could find. So come with us to Korea to meet Stoney, a kid who has trouble making friends because he travels so much, as he meets one of three refugee Robotex robots on the run from their enemies. All I can promise is that you’ve seen worse. I’m posting this more for curiosity than promotion.
