BW’s Morning Article Link: Kindergarten Supercop

It’s interesting how many shows exist about schools to teach kids how to be superheroes. Even as a kid we had Hero High, part of the “Kids Super Power Hour with Shazam!”, then you have movies like Sky High and two different incarnations of DC Super Hero Girls, one of which was also about a super hero high school (that would be the good one–no offense to Laura Faust but “My Little Pony-ing” Super Hero Girls doesn’t work for me), and I remember a comic that was about this concept as well.

However, none of them were created by Stan Lee (unless you count the X-Men) or starred Arnold Schwarzenegger in a co-production with China about a superhero kindergarten. I have to ask why this obsession with China lately in the entertainment world. Movie makers think about China when they create a movie, which is why the Ancient One was changed in Doctor Strange, there’s this huge controversy right now with Blizzard taking their prize back from a contest winner for supporting the protestors to Chinese government, and now this. Add in Lee’s daughter suing Pow! Entertainment for mishandling her late father’s IP and this is just an odd thing to see given the current climate.

Oh, and thanks to bad scheduling on my part the Tuesday Marvel comic review got posted yesterday by mistake so no comic review today.

Chapter By Chapter: The Merry Adv. Of Robin Hood part third ch. 3

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Remember, the book is in public domain. Download or read the ebook online legally and for free at Project Gutenberg, Google Books or the Internet Archive among other sites, or check out the audiobook from LibriVox. You can also use a print copy. In either case my copy may not match up with yours chapter-wise. Follow along with the very-long subtitle. For this chapter:

Part Third

Recounting How Allan A Dale Was Brought to Robin Hood, Who Promised to Help Him in Trouble. Also How Robin Sought the Curtal Friar of Fountain Abbey With That Aim in View. Likewise, How Robin Hood Brought Two True Lovers Together Who Would Else Have Been Made Unhappy All Their Lives

For those of you who haven’t been keeping up, Robin Hood is helping Allan A Dale wed his true love before she’s forced to marry an older man. So far, being a minstrel is the only thing that’s remained of Allan in the various reinterpretations over the centuries. We also met Friar Tuck, being a friar also the only thing that’s remained, as despite being met during a huge feast Tuck can kick butt and let God sort them out. Although being a friar I’m guessing he’s have to assist that anyway. Now Robin has the Friar, and the groom. Can he now get the bride to the right altar in time?

BW’s Morning Article Link: The End Of Fortnite?

I looked up “black hole” in my media library and this was all I had.

This may be old news by the time you see it since we don’t know what Epic is planning for Columbus Day but right now it appears the world of Fortnite is unplayable as the entire map has been sucked into a black hole. Is this Epic’s way of redoing the entire map through the game’s story or did Canada hack their servers? Time will tell, I guess but CNet isn’t convinced they’re ending. By the time you see this it may even have been restored. Singularities are like the universe’s biggest pranks in sci-fi.

Jake & Leon #428: Don’t Care Comics

They’re even starting to admit they don’t care about the comics. It’s just a concept they can use to hide lack of creativity.

It’s true. In the new timeline Wonder Woman shows up around World War II (at least in post-Crisis that was retconned as her mother) because…I don’t know, “girl power”, the success of the movie, or maybe both. Outside of a brief glimmer in the Rebirth period the whole DC Universe has been one big re-imagining, not fun, and not the DC Universe in tone or quality. They’ve ruined cultural icons that existed before they were born and they’re pleased about it, and that goes for Warner Brothers and the folks behind Gotham, the not-Joker movie, and I’m betting that Alfred Pennyworth namesake over on Epix because that’s the trend. They had a free preview week last week of Epix but the only thing I got out of that was the Bumblebee movie. There’s a Finally Watched of that in our future, but no promises of this week.

Meanwhile I took time away from reviewing Transformers Universe toys to track down a case I wanted. It was both a success and a mild failure. See what I mean in the article.

As for what IS coming up this week? The last of the videos, and the one I was working up to, from Cartoon Cypher on the topic of dub versus sub in anime is up for Tuesday. We have another chapter of The Merry Adventures Of Robin Hood as well as the intros for Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo, two Transformers series we still haven’t gotten legally in the US. I’m not sure what else I’m doing yet but hopefully it will be worth your time and mine. Have a good week, folks!

Saturday Night Showcase: Doctor Who–Mission To The Unknown

“Mission To The Unknown” is interesting more for it’s place in the series rather than the story itself. It was Verity Lambert’s last as the producer of Doctor Who, and features none of the Companions nor the Doctor himself. Even today’s “Doctor lite” episodes have him (or currently her) in a cameo and focuses on a Companion or someone else caught up in the Doctor’s world. This was to give William Hartnell, Peter Purves (Steve Taylor), and Maureen O’Brien (Vicki Pallister) an extra week off. It’s also the only one-episode story in all of classic Doctor Who, though today’s incarnation is usually a bunch of one episode stories, one two-parter, and a season-long subplot arc.

It’s also one of the infamous missing episodes.

For those of you who haven’t heard, the BBC destroyed many of their shows after the season was over to make room for the next set of shows. This included Doctor Who until they realized reruns and syndication worldwide was something important. Many of the episodes that have been found were international releases, but there have also been attempts to use audio recorded by fans (who else up to my generation put the mic of a tape recorder to the TV speaker before home video was a major market?) and either combining them with photos from the studio or animation by Cosgrove Hall. (Some of you may remember them as the folks behind Danger Mouse and Count Duckula.) “Mission To The Unknown” was even released as an audio drama by Big Finish.

Tonight however is something different. The University Of Central Lancaster opted to remake the episode, using the closest thing we have to 1960s film-making techniques on a couch cushion budget (we’ve advanced so far that a kid with a computer and a smartphone can do better). The episode was posted to the BBC’s official Doctor Who YouTube channel along with a making of documentary that will be posted here right under the episode itself. Enjoy!
