BW’s Morning Article Link: The Canceled Gotham By Gaslight Game

Gotham By Gaslight is a Batman “Elseworlds” story taking place in the 18th century. It was recently adapted into a direct-to-video animated movie. However, there was an attempt to make it into a video game. As I continue to go through my old emails I came across this story on Kotaku showing test footage for the game. It doesn’t say why the pitch was turned down but visually it looks pretty cool.

Chapter By Chapter: The Death & Life Of Superman ch. 8

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

When last we were here Superman was giving a televised Q&A with schoolkids, and we saw a couple of them were brats. Not surprising since they were Guy Gardner fans. Speaking of Guy, he and the current version of the Justice League just ran into the creature that will soon earn the name Doomsday.

Doomsday is like a final boss character in video games in that he has two forms, the one where he’s wrapped up and the one where he has all those indestructible bony protrusions that we usually see him as. As a villain I think his design works great. He only exists to destroy and kill and the design tells you that immediately. Superman doesn’t kill and will often give the villain every chance to surrender but to pull this story off you need a foe so obviously evil and psychotically destructive that even Superman isn’t inclined to say “give up and we can work this out peacefully”. You have to know he’s here for only one thing and there’s only one way to stop him. On that Doomsday’s design perfectly fits the bill.

Jake & Leon #363: DC Comic Book Day

Marvel may make better movies, but DC is winning Marvel Comic readers over.

Trying to write this post and watch Atop The Fourth Wall’s 500th episode livestream is not easy but I’ll try it.

When you base one of your biggest movies on a comic, and still nobody’s reading the comic (Black Panther), maybe rethink how you’re approaching comics.

No Clutter Report this week because my Saturday was filled with comic review writing. So much comic review writing.

I have the last of the Gargoyle comics I own up for review this week, plus the comic I teased in yesterday’s feature article. And if it’s still up by post time I have a really good Saturday Night Showcase thanks to Shout Factory. And watch it go down now that I’ve said that. Meanwhile I have another Finally Watched I want to do this week, since numerous Free Preview Weekends on the Premium channels has given me a chance to go through my movie bucket list. And while the Friday Night Fights are now over its ghost will remain for a while as I go over my favorite Friday Night Fights over the years that I’ve posted. It’s a last gasp of Best Of FNF starting this Friday.

BW’s Free Comic Book Day 2018 Haul

So I made it out to Free Comic Book Day this year. A few new comics under my belt. They had an artist there and I wish I could have bought the print he had of the Iron Giant holding the TARDIS even though I have no place to currently hang it. So instead I will promote artist Frank Malec’s Facebook and tell you I have a birthday coming in July. Otherwise it was nice little diversion from stores, doctors, and the occasional family gathering for me to get out of the house for.

Of the comics I was hoping to pick up there were a few I missed. Crush, The Tick, Ghost In The Shell: Global Neural Network, Sparks, and My Hero Academia/RWBY were both gone by the time I got there. I also picked up World’s Greatest Cartoonists, forgetting I looked at the previews and these weren’t mind kind of comics, but I can at least appreciate the varied art styles. I did manage to snag eight comics off of my want list (I didn’t mention the Overstreet book because I thought it would be magazine style, not comic style) and reviewed them on Twitter under the #BW_FCBD hashtag. But here’s is a wrap-up of what I picked out.

Friday Night PRIZE Fights: He-Man’s True Power Source

Word from the way this was promoted tonight is the last Friday Night Fight! I can’t say I’m surprised but it is a sad occasion. From the days of the late site Always Bet On Bahlactus, where the blogging event originated, through today this was a fun way to look at the many battles that took place in comics. If I knew my collection better I would have been a better contender, but I did pull off a few wins, even a couple of prize fights. That’s not a bad career.

So how should I complete this run? My first thought was Transformers. It’s where my first Friday Night Fight came from so it makes sense to come full circle. And I actually have some Shockwave fights left. I don’t think we’ve seen Shockwave since…

Right. However, there is one source that I don’t think anybody used in the history of Friday Night Fights, and it just feels right to go with that. Plus there’s one fight I’ve been trying to find the spot to show you guys. And since this may be my last chance, I’m ending with the mini-comic adventures of He-Man and my favorite writer/art team of Masters Of The Universe as the most powerful man in the universe faces one of Skeletor’s greatest near-victories ever. And no marrying his clone daughter to do it. Yeah, things get weird in comics, even minicomics.
