BW’s Daily Article Link: Darkwing Duck Returns To Comics

I continue to not understand the people at Disney. Their decisions make less and less sense. For our purposes, they took the Disney Afternoon and Muppet comics away from Boom!, who were doing a great job, presumably because now they have Marvel. Outside of a couple Marvel comics they did nothing with them. (I’m never getting that Spider-Ham crossover…and if I do it will probably be that cheap cartoon knockoff instead of the real Peter Porker.) Meanwhile they have IDW doing their kids titles, and now Dynamite Publishing is putting out the next Darkwing Duck comic according to ICv2.

The article doesn’t say if it will be based on the original show or the rebooted Ducktales incarnation, or even something original. I’m just wondering what the point of taking over Marvel was and ending deals with other comic companies only to have IDW and Dynamite doing other Marvel and Disney comics instead?

My (Late) Thoughts On The Rippaverse

Look, I know his name is Eric July but did he have to wait until I was in the middle of my birthday break to drop THE BIGGEST NEWS IN INDIE COMICS SINCE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES?

Yes, while I was taking time off to recharge, get some behind-the-scenes things done, and do some personal stuff Eric July, known online as “Youngrippa59“, was launching a project he had been teasing for a while now, his own comic publishing company and universe. I wanted to see what he would actually do, just in case this ended up another American Original project (anyone remember them, because they seemed to disappear after their title announcement?) where things were announced but fell through. Starting a new company isn’t easy or more people would do it.

Well, he did it. Rippaverse is the name he went with, inspired by his screen and musician name. Why not Rippa Comics? I don’t know. It’s not a bad name and the logo’s okay. What’s more important is he is delivering on what he promised. His first book is the graphic novel Isom, the introduction to this new universe. And it was not done through crowdfunding or getting investors or the mighty power of his amazing beard. Between this and his usual political commentary there are detractors (Reddit won’t even allow discussion of it despite being a black man starting his own company and with a black superhero as the core hero) but let’s look at what he’s done so far and what he has said he wants to do and judge things properly through a mostly unbiased lens. You know, like a good critic.

BW’s Daily Article Link: Nichelle Nichols Passes Away

December 28, 1932 – July 30, 2022

During the last days of my time off another of my childhood favorites have sadly left this world, but not in the way her famous character did. Nichelle Nichols, known for playing Lt. Uhura on Star Trek, has passed away at 89. I never got to meet her (while we were both at ConnectiCon 2015 she was under the weather and couldn’t take part, though I saw in in passing in a wheelchair at the hotel club for a little while but decided to leave her be), my cousin’s husband’s brother-in-law did get to meet her at the airport when she went home. (Nothing to brag on my end, but I find that interesting. He didn’t even know about the con.) Nichols is of course famous for the first on-screen lip-lock between a black woman and a white man, among breaking other barriers just by being on the show.

My heart goes out to her friends and family. She also left a lot of fans behind who were inspired by her work. We all leave eventually but she gets to leave it better for her time here.

Chapter By Chapter #20 Reveal

Well, we’re back from the hiatus and that means it’s time for another novel review. As always…

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

And we’re starting August with a brand new…old…book. We’re still in the science fiction realm but this time instead of a book based on an existing alternate media series, which I find is most of my collection, this book actually started one. See if you can guess what it is with these clues.

  • It’s the first book in a series created and written by an actor known for a sci-fi show and a cop drama, thus merging the two.
  • The book spawned a few more sequels.
  • Each of those sequels and this book were adapted into a set of TV movies as part of a short-lived syndicated late-nite programming block…
  • …that was followed up with a short-lived series on USA Network featuring the same cast (including the author in a supporting role).
  • Said show and adaptations also was made into a really terrible first-person shooter released on DOS that literally nobody talks about. Wait, I’m exaggerating. I just checked YouTube and apparently there are videos about it or featuring gameplay. However, the fact that I had to look for it, even with the few video game sites and channels I follow, says something.
  • Unrelated to that show were two different comic runs, one of which I’ve reviewed here at the Spotlight and the other I haven’t read.

Figured it out yet? Our next Chapter By Chapter book is……..
