December 28, 1932 – July 30, 2022

During the last days of my time off another of my childhood favorites have sadly left this world, but not in the way her famous character did. Nichelle Nichols, known for playing Lt. Uhura on Star Trek, has passed away at 89. I never got to meet her (while we were both at ConnectiCon 2015 she was under the weather and couldn’t take part, though I saw in in passing in a wheelchair at the hotel club for a little while but decided to leave her be), my cousin’s husband’s brother-in-law did get to meet her at the airport when she went home. (Nothing to brag on my end, but I find that interesting. He didn’t even know about the con.) Nichols is of course famous for the first on-screen lip-lock between a black woman and a white man, among breaking other barriers just by being on the show.

My heart goes out to her friends and family. She also left a lot of fans behind who were inspired by her work. We all leave eventually but she gets to leave it better for her time here.
