BW Vs The Closer Look: Batman Can Be TOO Dark

Everybody has their own reason to like or dislike certain characters. Some of the most popular characters in fiction are characters I really don’t like and some of my favorite characters are looked down upon by the majority, or at least the vocal majority. Even if you agree on A, B, C, and D here comes H and you can be at polar opposites. Even if you both like J it could be for vastly different reasons.

That’s where I’m coming from when examining the video below by Henry over at The Closer Look. His thesis is on why “we” love a darker Batman. I’m certainly not against a darker Batman. I come from the Bronze Age of comics, the DCAU had a great take on Batman, and in both cases this feels like a proper Batman. However, to say that it’s the darkness that makes him interesting I’m not sure I agree with…because as I watch this video if his take on Batman was right take, then I’m not sure I would be a Batman fan. So what am I seeing that he doesn’t and vice versa?

BW’s Daily Video: The Iconic Batman

Catch more from Professor Geek on YouTube

Keep this in mind for tonight’s post, especially that scene with Batgirl at the end.

The Batgirl Movie Cancelled (And What’s Next)

A bombshell dropped on the superhero movie world last night with the announced cancelation of Batgirl, the first solo outing based on Barbara Gordon…albeit loosely. Leslie Grace, a woman of Dominican decent, was set to play the redheaded caucasian Batgirl, which given the images I’ve seen of her isn’t nearly as bad as the Latina Supergirl they wanted to drop on us. Grace was just light enough to pull it off in the same way that the half-Japanese Dean Cain once pulled off Superman in Lois & Clark. This also further weakens Michael Keaton’s odds of returning in what’s been called a Batman Beyond style mentor role to new heroes. There was also talk on one of my sources that this new Batgirl and Latina Supergirl would replace their male counterparts in the DC Extended Universe version of the DC “Trinity”, keeping Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

Now that’s all gone, leaving questions as to the future of the DCEU. Already suffering from a few contentious issues from traditional DC universe fans and even a bunch of legal snafus it may be the change in leadership between WarnerMedia and Warner Brothers Discovery that led to the movie’s downfall…and yet the movie is practically ready to release. What could this mean going forward? At this point it’s all speculation but what the heck, that’s fun.

BW’s Daily Article Link: Darkwing Duck Returns To Comics

I continue to not understand the people at Disney. Their decisions make less and less sense. For our purposes, they took the Disney Afternoon and Muppet comics away from Boom!, who were doing a great job, presumably because now they have Marvel. Outside of a couple Marvel comics they did nothing with them. (I’m never getting that Spider-Ham crossover…and if I do it will probably be that cheap cartoon knockoff instead of the real Peter Porker.) Meanwhile they have IDW doing their kids titles, and now Dynamite Publishing is putting out the next Darkwing Duck comic according to ICv2.

The article doesn’t say if it will be based on the original show or the rebooted Ducktales incarnation, or even something original. I’m just wondering what the point of taking over Marvel was and ending deals with other comic companies only to have IDW and Dynamite doing other Marvel and Disney comics instead?

My (Late) Thoughts On The Rippaverse

Look, I know his name is Eric July but did he have to wait until I was in the middle of my birthday break to drop THE BIGGEST NEWS IN INDIE COMICS SINCE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES?

Yes, while I was taking time off to recharge, get some behind-the-scenes things done, and do some personal stuff Eric July, known online as “Youngrippa59“, was launching a project he had been teasing for a while now, his own comic publishing company and universe. I wanted to see what he would actually do, just in case this ended up another American Original project (anyone remember them, because they seemed to disappear after their title announcement?) where things were announced but fell through. Starting a new company isn’t easy or more people would do it.

Well, he did it. Rippaverse is the name he went with, inspired by his screen and musician name. Why not Rippa Comics? I don’t know. It’s not a bad name and the logo’s okay. What’s more important is he is delivering on what he promised. His first book is the graphic novel Isom, the introduction to this new universe. And it was not done through crowdfunding or getting investors or the mighty power of his amazing beard. Between this and his usual political commentary there are detractors (Reddit won’t even allow discussion of it despite being a black man starting his own company and with a black superhero as the core hero) but let’s look at what he’s done so far and what he has said he wants to do and judge things properly through a mostly unbiased lens. You know, like a good critic.
