Saturday Night Showcase: The Defenders Of The Earth Meets Prince Valiant

A long time ago in a previous Saturday Night Showcase I brought you the first two episodes of Defenders Of The Earth, a show where King Features Syndicate brought together some of their greatest action heroes. Flash Gordon, Mandrake The Magician and his loyal companion Lothar, and the Phantom (though this being set in the future they jumped to the 27th Phantom…which doesn’t explain how Mandrake and Lothar are there since Lothar is a mortal even if Mandrake isn’t) joined together to face Ming The Merciless. Each brought their own kids while Dale was turned into the supercomputer Dynak-X. (Long story…two episodes worth in fact.) While Hulu, where I got the embeds from originally, stopped doing embeds for websites (thus dropping one of the features that benefited their sites…they get the ad revenue, I get the readers and no money) I recently learned that King Features created their own “Comics Kingdom” YouTube channel. The name comes from their online comic strip archive.

Through this channel I was able to update the Saturday Night Showcase entries on the Saturday Morning Flash Gordon cartoon I grew up with and is still my favorite Sat AM show (at least in season one), as well as The Legend Of Prince Valiant, the Family Channel series adapting that comic. Sadly they don’t have Phantom: 2040 up there as of this writing, so to highlight this channel I have another Defenders Of The Earth episode, which actually guest-stars Prince Valiant and his son Arn (named for his friend as seen in TLOPV). In this episode Ming tricks the Defenders into a time warp with a mutant parasite monster to destroy Earth and his enemies in one shot. The heroes team with Valiant and Arn to stop the monster as well as rescue Valiant’s wife from an evil sorcerer seeking the power of the Eternity Stone. I didn’t even remember this episode existed. Enjoy!

BW Vs DC Future State finale: Justice League Family (aka All The Rest)

“Justice League Family” seems to just be a catch-all for everyone they wanted to use but couldn’t be shoved into Gotham City or Metropolis. While there is a Justice League comic (with a Justice League Dark back-up) the rest are just the other heroes. So we won’t even be discussing the League itself until the end as we set up who else besides Superman Jon Kent and Batman Unknown. Seriously, the solicit has [REDACTED], making me now wonder if there was a last-minute character change since all the previous 5G reports said it would be Luke Fox and neither the press release nor the solicits for Future State seem to counter that except the Justice League January solicitation.

So we get to see what the rest of the world is like outside of Gotham and Metropolis, and if you think this is going to be any better than the fascist state and the city in a bottle you forgot this was Dan DiDio’s brainchild. What I’m hoping is the last gasp of DiDio’s Darker DC makes me wonder if there was any coordination at all, the problem that’s plagued DC since at least the New 52, because I don’t think a lot of these fates for the outside world mesh very well. There has to be some kind of joint incident that created the Future State timeline but darned if I know what it is.

BW’s Daily Video: Japanese Man Reacts To “Engrish”

“Engrish” is the term used to describe poor translations from Japanese (and some other languages that don’t follow Western grammar rules) into English. Some of these are rather funny, but here’s an actual Japanese person who speaks English rather well reacting to some of these signs. There may be some bad language…but not all of it intentionally. You’ll see what I mean.

In the comments it was noted that SHUNchan (follow him on YouTube for more Japan/America discussion videos) didn’t realize “locked up” means “put in jail” in English slang. As for the Chinese translation of the “hang your employees” sign one commentor translated thusly: “ In Chinese the word they used for “calling your employees” is the same as the word for “hanging up”. They meant it as “ring for your employees”. (In hospitals we use that word to give out numbers to patients for diagnosis, like “419 please come to XX room”)” while someone else responded in the same thread “But the literal translation for the Chinese sign said, “If you have any questions, feel free to hang your employees voice.” Which doesn’t make sense in Chinese. 😂”. It didn’t make sense in English either. 😀

And let’s be honest, it’s still more effort than the fake Japanese we all did for years.

BW Vs DC’s Future State part 3: The Superman Family

It is the treatment of Superman that has thus far killed my interest in DC Comics, being a Superman fan since before I knew what “invulnerable” meant (a word I first read as a kid in a Superman comic). Rebirth fixed a lot of the damage done to the character by the New 52 and showed there was more to explore with a married Superman…fatherhood. Then DiDio brings in Bendis, who ages up Jon, estranges the Supermarriage, and retconned Krypton’s destruction to be some villain he created. There went all that good will. At least someone is to blame for evil alternate Jor-El.

So whatever interest I have in this event will probably depend on what they plan to do with the Man Of Steel and his ever shrinking crew of local allies. Steel is gone, Black Lightning and his daughters will probably be used more in the Outsiders back-ups in the Batman stories, and I don’t know if the Guardian is even canon anymore. So it’s what they plan to do with Superman, Superboy 3, and Supergirl that will make the difference. And based on the press release and January solicitations that’s out the window.
