BW’s Morning Article Link: Stargirl Coming To The CW

The CW has released a trailer for yet another DC Comics based series, Stargirl. They seem to be sticking with the connection to Starman but are ignoring her pre-superpower ties to the Star-Spangled Kid, a Golden Age hero her stepfather used to be the sidekick of. Still it looks good and they aren’t playing up the feminist angle like they did with Batwoman…at least not yet. However, given the CW’s recent approach and the still darker but not as bad as the DCEU style I’m expecting to be disappointed. I hope I’m not as this is another character I’ve enjoyed elsewhere but I remain skeptical until I see the show in action.

Rey Versus Luke Skywalker And The “Mary Sue Moment”

My lack of third trilogy imagery comes not from bias but the fact that the few movie reviews I have didn’t use any images from that time period.

Understand that I’m not part of the so-called “Fandom Menace” because I don’t join movements. I gather with fellow fans of a genre, format, or specific property and share my opinion on things. I don’t hate Rey and I’m one of the few detractors of the sequel trilogy to doesn’t hate the fact that Rey didn’t come from great warriors of destiny or anything (although that may well be retconned away in the next movie). I could even accept that she has a natural tie to the Force (again, like Rowan Freemaker–it’s canon to me!) or that the Force itself was trying to restore balance when the Jedi weren’t restored, since Snoake and Kylo Ren prove the Sith aren’t gone. I could accept these excuses.

We do not get these excuses. Therein lies the problem.

The Literature Devil, a YouTube commentary channel whose host will start the video promoting a new comic, lets his bias show in his snark but also goes over the difference between the overused term “Mary Sue“, and what he calls the “Mary Sue Moment” to explain why the problem with Rey isn’t that she’s good, but the reasoning we’re given why she’s good…or the lack thereof…and why her journey doesn’t connect with people the same way Luke Skywalker’s journey to becoming a Jedi did. (And why his appearance in The Last Jedi enraged his fans.)

BW’s Morning Video: Enya Wishes You A Merry Christmas

Some Christmas Lyrics Just Aren’t Good

Is figgy pudding even that good it requires you to demand it?

I love Christmas music. That should be obvious given one of my two Christmas playlists on YouTube is only Christmas music and I try to add more to it every Christmas. (It’s not easy keeping Penatonix from taking it over. They put out a lot of great Christmas music on their channel.) However, I am willing to admit that not every Christmas song is a winner. We’ve seen that when I took on the holiday failure that is “Do They Know It’s Christmas“, the article that led to Sing Me A Story, which I try to get a Christmas song into each year. Some songs aren’t even really about Christmas but somehow get played only for the holidays every year.

YouTube personality The Rap Critic takes a look at a few timeless classics and covers and showcases how the wrong lyric can meddle even the yuletide message. He swears once or twice but it’s deserved considering the song he’s tearing apart. You know the one.
