Diving Into The Mandalorian

Like the toy, the character is only what fans make him to be.

To be honest not a lot of interesting news (to me anyway) came out of D23, the annual Disney fan gathering. I mean, stuff came out. The Pixar news I should probably look into. However, I don’t care about Disney’s live-actionification of their animated classics, the Marvel news involves characters I wasn’t invested in and the Black Widow news we had previously took the interest out of that movie. The Rise Of Skywalker interests me more out of morbid curiosity and getting to spend time with my friends than any real interest in the movie itself. And Disney+ is only interesting if you can afford to pay for it. Interesting that YouTube and VuDu are embracing ad-support for the unsubscribed and bonuses if you are subscribed but everyone else still insists on paid subscriptions. There are so few free services left and by the time you pay for all the other ones it’ll probably end up costing MORE than cable or satellite.

One of the few things worth finding interest in is The Mandalorian, Star Wars’ first ever live-action series for Disney+. They’ve had the movie of course, TV movies like the two Ewok movies, and animated series, but this is their first live-action series. Part of the D23 news includes a trailer, and while I have a mixed opinion there’s a more positive one online than the franchise has had since The Last Jedi.

BW’s Morning Article: YouTube Originals For Everyone

YouTube decided to do it’s own broadcasting some years ago, creating ways to watch TV shows legally without going to another service and creating their own original programs, the only one of which I’ve seen get any real press being Cobra Kai, the Karate Kid spinoff. The originals were only available to YouTube Premium subscribers (formerly YouTube Red but I think the camera people took issue with it or something or maybe it was Redtube, the porno YouTube) who also get to watch the usual homemade content without ads. While being a Premium subscriber still has its benefits /Film is reporting that the YouTube originals already streaming will now be available to the general public with ads as they change the focus of their subscription content.

Chapter By Chapter: The Merry Adv Of Robin Hood part 1st ch. 2

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Remember, the book is in public domain. Download or read the ebook online legally and for free at Project Gutenberg, Google Books or the Internet Archive among other sites, or check out the audiobook from LibriVox. You can also use a print copy. In either case my copy may not match up with yours chapter-wise. Follow along with the very-long subtitle. For this chapter:

Part First:

Telling How The Sheriff Of Nottingham Swore That He Would Deal Dole To Robin Hood. Also How He Made Three Trial Thereat, But Missed Each Time By A Good Bow’s Length.

In our last visit to Nottingham we saw Robin outsmart a tinker who wanted to serve him his warrant. Now I’m a bit confused. This wasn’t about the tinker bringing Robin in, just handing him a warrant. Technically Robin not getting the warrant doesn’t mean he’s automatically in jail. They still have to catch the guy and put him in irons. It’s not a teleportation signal, and it doesn’t suddenly not count that Robin took it from him (and probably destroyed it) rather than the tinker or the Sheriff’s other men “officially” serving him with it. He’s still not going so this feels more like legal procedure more than anything actually useful to their time, like actually arresting him.

Thus far Robin has gone from unwitting foil who had who could plead self-defense and into a guy who just likes to mess with the authorities. I’m not saying Robin is really the villain of this book but thus far he doesn’t quite resemble the hero we all know. I wonder what the second story will do to change this because based on the chapter title this is going to be another of Robin’s constantly chronicled outings. You’ll know which one I mean from the title, but I’m curious how it plays out given the more morally questionable Robin of the bygone era.

II: The Shooting Match At Nottingham Town

I wonder if this will go better for him than the last time he went to an archery competition. Remember, that’s how this all started.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Invasion Of Earth Prime

Gary over at Crisis On Earth Prime has completed another set of annotations. A while ago but I’m a bit behind. Anyway, the latest annotated event is Invasion, the 1988 crossover event where Legion Of Super Heroes headache the Dominators decided to invade Earth a bit early, attacking in the modern day. I have not read the event (I’ve read very few events actually), but I figured someone out there who has might want to see this, and the man put a lot of work into it. This is also the event that inspired the CW DCU (or “Arrowverse”) crossover.

Jake & Leon #421: Give Me A Break…Room

There’s also a bathroom and the place they park Fizzbin’s ship, but we’ve never been to those rooms. Inside anyway.

I go over it a bit more in the commentary (click to comic to see it in the archives) but I’ve set comics in the break room and had to keep checking old strips to see what it looks like. The green room is easy, it’s a couch and a doorway but I may expand that in the future. I had the same problem with the art studio so I did the same thing here I did there and made a dedicated set. I still prefer to draw it out, but now I have template I can also just put into the comic in an emergency.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week I had to clean the bathroom so no actual clutter cleaning, just plain old cleaning.

So now that I’m all caught up with this year’s Free Comic Book Day haul Saturday is going back to getting caught up on the comiXology library for the  Saturday comic review. We’re also nearing the end of the Radioactive Man comics so I’ll be moving further through my library in a few weeks, after the Simpsons Super Specials I have yet to review, some of which also feature Radioactive Man. And Bartman. Who remembers Bartman?

I have heard about Sony and Marvel having a falling out over the MCU Spidey movies. I think it’s over percentage or something but since I’m having a hard enough time dodging Avengers spoilers (remember, I only recently got up to Age Of Ultron) and spoilers for Spider-Man: Far From Home I find it a bit difficult to cover MCU-related stuff. I don’t like what I’m hearing about Black Widow as I mentioned, but until I see the Infinity movies and Guardians Of The Galaxy volumes 1 and 2 I’m a bit limited if I want to get any enjoyment out of those movies. I will have other discussion topic for the week and I’m sure something else coming out of the Disney D23 event over the weekend I’ll want to discuss, but I won’t be talking Spidey news currently. What will I discuss? I guess we’ll both find out beyond the continuing Chapter By Chapter review of Robin Hood’s ye old adventures. Have a good week, everyone!
