Saturday Night Showcase: He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe–Teela’s Quest (+ Commentary)

With the recent announcement of Masters Of The Universe: Revelation and the odd choice to focus on Teela rather than He-Man it seems a pertinent time to my potential reader numbers to talk about some of the supposed dangling threads of the original series. As in this is the only one I know of. “Teela’s Quest” is written by Paul Dini, who would go on to earn a name for himself on shows like Batman: The Animated Series and the rest of the DCAU. The story follows Teela’s quest (fittingly) to learn who her real mother is.

Additionally tonight I’ll be posting a commentary by James Eatock, formerly runner of the Official He-Man channel who also contributed bonus features to the early days of the channel and is one of the foremost authorities on the series both on screen and behind the scenes, plus some extra thoughts of my own. Enjoy.

Free Comic Inside: Atari Force #4

Our rotation brings us back again to Atari Force! For those new around here this minicomic miniseries was packed with games for the Atari 2600 in the 1980s. A later full comic series was released on store shelves by DC Comics, who were also behind the miniseries. The story thus far: Earth had a big war and what’s left of the nations aren’t the same. Rising from the ashes was Atari, who went from being a video game company to a premiere research group with their own astronauts and everything. In other words the complete opposite of what actually happened to Atari. I wonder we’ll get a “Facebook Force” or “Google Force” in the future?

Well, one of the projects Atari is working on in the post-apocalyptic fantasy world where Atari is anything besides a nostalgic brand name is traveling through the multiverse to seek a new Earth to live on. I’m not sure that’s how the multiverse works since one would assume an alternate Earth would still have an alternate population who wouldn’t want to see what happened to the bad Earth happen to theirs. Unless they’re just really big fans of Centipede and will welcome them with open arms. This is where I introduce the cast briefly but they don’t really matter to this story. The focus is on another guy, which is already odd given the purpose is to sell video games.

“Umm, maybe you should stop playing the game for a moment.” “You’re just as bad as mom!”

BW’s Morning Article Link: The WRONG Spider-Marriage

Okay, somebody explain this to me. Peter Parker being married to Mary Jane is somehow a terrible thing to do to Peter, but marrying Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat, is a okay? I’m not kidding, Marvel is doing a comic that’s not a What If story in which Spider-Man marries Black Cat. He broke up with her because she couldn’t accept the Peter side of her, while MJ, who accepts both his Peter and Spidey lives, gets the boot? Is Spidey more relatable when he’s marrying an occasional supervillain? Isn’t she a villain right now in the comics?

Now maybe something will screw it up, like when that other animal-themed hero was set to wed a cat-themed occasional hero over at DC, or the Kitty Pride/Colossus wedding that was replaced last-minute with a Gambit/Rogue wedding over in the X-titles but I have a feeling Joe Quesada, Marvel publisher and the guy behind One More Day, is sitting at his office laughing at those of us who want the devil deal tossed out and the true Parker spouses back together. It’s like the people running DC and Marvel are trying to kill superhero comics sometimes. I don’t think they are, but sometimes it feels like it. You’d think they want to do something that the fans can be happy about. Apparently not and this is one of the reasons sales of comics are going down despite the movie popularity and more people on the planet.

How Is Black Widow Sexist?

A woman cosplaying as Black Widow, apparently a sexist character, at ComiCONN 2013.

Yeah, that’s what we’re apparently being told by both Esquire commentary writer Dom Nero (apparently you’re allowed to swear in Esquire, which I thought had more class) and by Jac Schaeffer, the writer for the upcoming Black Widow movie. Fans of both the Marvel Comics Universe and Marvel Cinematic Universe has been asking for this movie since Iron Man 2 opened the possibility. Since then she’s popped up in a few different Marvel movies but has yet to receive her own. I wrote in the past that they should only do so if they have a good story for her. Apparently even if we do we aren’t getting a good adaptation of the character.

“I’m not interested in adhering to comic canon that is discriminatory in any way or that violates my values system.”

This leads me to ask why you’re doing so then? It would like me working on The Boys, the Amazon series based on the WildStorm/Dynamite series where super”heroes” act more like supervillains, a direction I think DiDio would love to take DC. That violates my beliefs on superheroes and Marvel comics adheres less to my values system, or good superhero stories, every issue they put out. So I wouldn’t work on them. This is another example of “I can do it better but don’t have the guts to work on something original because I like the name and want everything out there to be produced only for my tastes and beliefs”, and she even states in the article that she “wasn’t a huge superhero movie fan before starting to work [at Marvel], but now that I’m doing it, there’s just so much opportunity to make big, positive statements.”

For some reason both the article and movie writers, who have shown they know or care nothing about the source material are going to tell the fans what Natasha Romanoff is because they don’t know or care about who she is. Fans do, which is why they asked for this rather than a Captain Marvel movie, which I’m still convinced was to make sure Billy Batson didn’t get to have his superhero name in the movie. (Which is fine because what we got was Billy Batson 52, not the REAL Billy.) I think we need to learn who Black Widow is and how she’s actually treated in the Marvel universe. What about her would make these two willingly ignorant sad sacks think she’s some sexist character? Let me see if I can figure this out.
