Captain Yuletide #s 1-4

Every year I (try to) bring you a superhero comic called Captain Yuletide. The story involves a special group of elves chose to save Christmas by being granted the power of Captain Yuletide. (Think Captain Universe over at Marvel, but not as overpowered.) Joined by the magic-infused Bryce The Green-Nosed Reindeer, the elf chosen is based on his or her special talents that makes them best suited to save Christmas from whatever the threat is. While I work on this year’s why not read the first four issues and get caught up with the legacy? They’re all downloadable PDF files for easy viewing and free. It’s a Christmas present you don’t have to worry about returning if you don’t like it. I hope you do though.

BW Morning Video: The Night Before Christmas On Sesame Street

David (played by Northern Calloway in the show and this recording) performs the poem, The Night Before Christmas on Sesame Street, from the album Merry Christmas From Sesame Street, which I think I still have around here somewhere. It was written by David Axlerod and Sam Pottle for the album. It’s name comes from Clement C. Moore’s poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” but despite what the poster stated I don’t think it’s a parody.

For you younger folks, David was one of the human characters on Sesame Street and apparently the character used to date Maria. I thought she and Luis were always a couple. I wonder why the show changed that? He left in 1989, explained as him moving to his grandmother’s farm. He had taken over Mr Hooper’s store after his passing away (both the actor and the character), and turned it over to Mr. Handford, whoever that is. I was kind of away from the show by that point. Yes, even the guy who watches Paw Patrol has kids shows he doesn’t watch anymore. Although I did try to watch a few episodes recently and the half-hour format HBO stuck them with really turn the show formulaic. It’s kind of sad.

Christmas Displays 2018

Every Christmas I like to take a look and see what Christmas displays are being posted online. I almost missed that this year, but luckily I remembered just in time. I’ve seen a number of news reports about people complaining about Christmas displays with some rather dumb reasoning. It’s one month (and whatever number of days are left after Thanksgiving) out of the year. Just relax and enjoy.

Here at BW Media Spotlight, the royal We loves these set-ups, even I don’t have the room for it or could afford the electric bill. I also lack the technical skill to put some of these together, as it takes a lot of programing to sync the lights to music and window projections even if they seem to all use the same covers. (Maybe it comes with the kits?)  Some are set-up for charity promotions. “If you like our display, give to charity” kind of deals, or else donations to pay the aforementioned electric bill.

So let’s just get over to YouTube and check out some really good ones. Actually, I’m going to start with a cute bit of news about one display that at least shows he meant well. Because we all need to boost our faith in humanity now and then.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Penny Marshall Passes Away

Oct 15, 1943 – Dec 17, 2018

Because I can’t seem to stay away from death at the moment, we also have to bring up the passing of Penny Marshall. Known as Laverne DeFazio from LaVerne and Shirley (a spin-off of Happy Days), Marshall’s biggest successes were in directing and producing movies, including Tom Hanks’ Big and the historical drama A League Of Their Own, about a woman’s baseball team during a time all the male players were drafted into World War 2. (A DJ yesterday noted that it’s the most profitable or popular sports movie ever. I forget which.) Prayers go out to her surviving family and friends.

Hey 2018, can I get back to talking about Birth instead of death please? We’re a few days out from Christmas week after all!

Eulogy For A Monstrobot

This is not a post anyone would look forward to write, especially this close to Christmas. It wasn’t the post I had scheduled for today. However, it’s one I felt I had to make. I tend to be part of three communities. My connection to the reviewing community has waned in recent years but I still maintain friendships from there. My focus has been on the comics community, tumultuous as certain parts of it has been lately, since that ties into my goals. However, blogging was my first connection to the internet outside of the Transformers community, which I’ve also lost ties to, and today the old comics blogosphere has suffered a huge lost.

Reports on Twitter are that Brian Snell of Slay Monstrobot Of The Deep passed away over the weekend.

I don’t have access to a picture of him, so forgive me for using the above panel for the RIP picture. It’s from the comic panel that the site gets its name from. The report comes from Facebook, where I admittedly don’t follow him so I’m going on reports from others. However, I have no reason to believe that he would lie about it, even if I didn’t see the post there myself since I’m not one of his Facebook friends. Even as I write this new posts, likes, and retweets are coming out as those who enjoyed his site struggle to deal with the news. I haven’t followed social media much as of late (since 2016 to be exact since I’ve either been sick, recovering, or catching up with stuff as well as other life issues) so I didn’t even know he was sick. As I write this no cause of death has been reported so I don’t know what exactly happened. But I do know what he left behind.
