BW’s Morning Video Link: Moarte Reviews Doctor Who’s Dogs Of Doom

Normally I wouldn’t bother but since it’s so close to my recent reviews of the “Dogs Of Doom” storyline from the Doctor Who Weekly reprints I thought it would be interesting to post this here. Every October Lewis Lovhaug does a video series of short reviews focusing on horror and horror-themed comic stories. Instead of Linkara we have Moarte (a name suggested by one of my former Reviewers Unknown colleagues Arthur Knowledge if memory serves), a host in the “vein” of late-night horror hosts like Elvira or Svengoolie. (Although MeTV moved Svengoolie to prime time but he was late night.) The show is called Longbox Of The Damned and in yesterday’s episode he looked at the Marvel US reprint of this storyline.

If you want to recall what I thought of the IDW reprint here’s those two issues. I think the Marvel colors are better suited for the story.

Free Comic Inside: She-Ra’s Blue Diamond Adventure

It’s time again to visit everyone’s favorite Girly-Girl Murder Machine, She-Ra! Well, She-Ra of the minicomics, where she turns her enemies into butterflies or stone walls. And this isn’t even the version fighting a civil war against an evil army. This is the She-Ra that in past installments we’ve seen play dress-up and fight Catra over jewelry and boys (namely Bow). Okay, Catra took over Bright Moon once but I’m not convinced it was for any reason other than being jealous She-Ra has the Crystal Castle and wanted a dream house of her own. Most of these stories feel more like they’re in high school and Catra’s just the mean girl, yet this She-Ra has the higher body count than the one actually fighting a war in the cartoons.

This is the last of the “series one” Princess Of Power minicomics, so who know? Maybe this time we’ll finally get a real case of our mighty heroine working to save the world from imminent danger…okay, I just saw the title, and they’re fighting over jewelry again. Girls, you were not getting the good stuff compared to your brothers. I’m sorry. Well, maybe something amazing will still come out of it. Or maybe She-Ra will butterfly another creature for being ugly. I really hope the new cartoon is only looking to the old one for inspiration. I mean, I doubt it given what I’ve heard so far but at least it isn’t the minicomics.

And not a single one of them has a winter coat. Bow doesn’t even own a shirt.

There’s a second story in this book as well, “Dragon’s Claw”, but we’ll be returning to the Marvel run next week starting with that issue, so I’ll review that story then. That’s the problem with IDW’s format. It’s more like a collection of strips rather than Marvel’s formatting it to look like an actual comic book.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Google’s Text Adventure

Google often offers games in their doodles, some of which become part of their Games app. But for you fans of old style text adventure games Google has you covered there as well, thanks to a secret code you can enter while on Google Chrome. I don’t know how long it’s been there but someone finally found and reported it. So have fun!

BW Filler Video: Science Versus Spider-Man

The last two days have kept me rather busy and tomorrow should be the same. So I didn’t have time for a proper article this week. Luckily someone has unwittingly helped me in my quest to prove that “realism” in superhero stories isn’t really what “they” think it is.

There is one member of the Game Theorists (as in people who have past or present contributed to the Game Theorists YouTube channel) that I haven’t really spotlighted before. Austin (who has his own channel with other gaming content if you’re curious) hosts The Science Of…, a show that uses science and math to demonstrate that real world physics and video game physics are very far apart. In this episode He looks at the surprise hit Spider-Man game that’s exclusive to the Playstation 4 (so I have no way of playing it even if I could afford it) and shows that Spidey’s powers, at least as depicted in that game, look real cool but realistically makes him more dangerous than The Punisher.

BW’s Morning Trailer: Our Star Wars Stories

I’ve written before about my problems with the Star Wars fandom, but Star Wars fans individually are very passionate about the franchise…which isn’t always a bad thing. Hopefully the web series Our Star Wars Stories will showcase the good in the fandom. You can watch it on their YouTube channel when it comes out, or maybe it’s exclusive to their website. I’m not sure. Either way it should be free to watch.
