All-New Batman: The Brave & The Bold #5
DC Comics (May 2011)
WRITER: Sholly Fisch PENCILER: Rick Burchett INKER: Dan Davis COLORIST: Gabe Eltaeb (notice his last name backwards is “Beatle”?) LETTERER: Travis Lanham ASSISTANT EDITOR: Chynna Clugston Flores EDITOR: Jim Chadwick
When a portal-using alien named Lenni is being chased by the Manhunters, Batman and Guy Gardner believe his claims of innocence. As Batman goes to find the real thief (who turns out to be Lobo), Guy battles the Manhunters.
What they got right: This story seemed a lot more relaxed than previous issues with this writer. Fisch seems to finding his stride with the way this particular version of Batman works. Future issues will show if he can build on this one.
What they got wrong: Batman’s detective work consists of asking some guy nicely. Not a lot of mystery here.
Recommendation: Fisch doesn’t need to be Landry Walker (who I still say did the best stories with this series) but hopefully this is a good sign that he’s finding his own “voice” in the style. We’ll have to see next issue.
