Since the list of New DCU groupings has been taken down I need a new angle to go over the upcoming #1s. While trying to think of how to do it I decided it was time to get back into this book. Mostly because after last weekend’s book collection organizing I realized I have a lot of books to go through. So….Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were a reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
Last time (if you can actually remember) we saw the Decepticons making their way into the bowels of Cybertron to get the two keys needed to obtain the Plasma Energy Chamber. This section is all action as Megatron just starts kicking tailpipe.
Starscream locates the first key but Irvine gives us more of the better Starscream he’s been writing. He realizes that Megatron has become a hypocrite. If you can remember back in the book (I’m thinking of sacrificing a “free day” and doing this every week–this is taking too long and actually taking some of my enjoyment out more than if I made myself read it) Megatron was talking about how he wanted to take down the ruling class essentially but Starscream has figured out that Megatron wants to BE part of the ruling class, specifically a Prime. He’s also smart enough to figure out how addictive Dark Energon is. This is my kind of Starscream–one with a brain!
On the other had it does as advertised as Megatron, fueled by the stuff, is able to beat the circuits out of Sentinel Prime. The fight may not match the game (I gave up on this being a game translation a loooooooooong time ago) but man Irvine wrote a good one. Later, he and Starscream go at it and both fights really don’t show Megatron’s superiority as much as Dark Energon’s. This is mostly where the writer goes on about how the Dark Energon is empowering him.
Since I no longer consider this within the video game’s continuity, I would love to see Unicron himself and the connection to Dark Energon implied by Sentinel Prime to be the subject of a further book.
Irvine also does a good job in describing the first appearance of Omega Supreme. It’s still somewhat based on how he arrives in the game, so that may help, but I can see the event in my head and that’s a good thing.
In fact, I’m curious to see how things go down with Omega in the next group of chapters. So since I can’t find that list of New DC family groupings anywhere I’m going to do just that tomorrow. Hope your ready for another Chapter by Chapter, although I’m sure plenty of you have long since read the book and completed the game if you care at all.
